Every year on December 13th, a special festival named Druk Wangyel Tshechu takes place at the Dochula Mountain pass in honour of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and the Royal Bhutan Army. Dochula is located about an hour's drive from Thimphu, enroute to Punakha. At Dochula, you will find 108 identical chortens (stupas); the complex serves as a landmark for travelers passing through Dochula. What makes the Druk Wangyel Tshechu unique is that the mask dances performed at this festival are not commonly seen in other festivals in the country.

Thimphu Tshechu is an annual religious festival held in Bhutan's capital city, Thimphu. This vibrant and colorful event is one of the most significant and eagerly anticipated festivals in Bhutan, drawing both locals and tourists from around the world. Here's a closer look at Thimphu Tshechu:

Religious Significance: Thimphu Tshechu is celebrated to honor Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the revered Buddhist saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. The festival typically coincides with Guru Rinpoche's birthday.

Masked Dances: The highlight of the festival is the series of traditional Bhutanese masked dances known as "Cham." These intricate and symbolic dances are performed by monks and laypeople, and they depict various stories from Buddhist mythology and history. Each dance has its own significance and is believed to bring blessings and ward off evil spirits.

Atsaras (Clowns): Alongside the masked dancers, you'll find entertainers dressed as clowns called "Atsaras." They add a playful and often humorous element to the festival, making jokes and interacting with the crowd.

Religious Ceremonies: In addition to the dances, Thimphu Tshechu includes religious ceremonies, prayers, and rituals conducted by monks. It's a time for spiritual reflection and renewal for the Bhutanese people.

Costumes: Festival-goers, both performers and spectators, often dress in their finest traditional Bhutanese attire, adding to the vibrant and festive atmosphere. It's a beautiful sight to see the streets filled with people in colorful and elaborate clothing.

Thongdrol Unveiling: On the final day of the festival, a massive thongdrol (religious scroll) is unfurled in front of the crowd. The mere sight of this sacred artwork is believed to cleanse one's sins and bring good luck.

Community Bonding: Thimphu Tshechu is not only a religious event but also a time for communities to come together. Families and friends gather to enjoy the festivities, share meals, and strengthen their bonds.

Held in the Kingdom's central administrative and religious center, Tashichhodzong, Thimphu Tshechu is one of the biggest and grandest religious and social celebrations in Bhutan. Although the public attends the festival over the course of three days, monks make preparations months in advance. The day and night before the actual festival, prayers and rituals are conducted to invoke the deity. For three days, mask dances are performed, like the Guru Tshengye (Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche), Shaw Shachi (Dance of the Stags), and others. It is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the Kingdom’s culture and mingle with locals who are dressed in their finest gho and kira.
This year, Thimphu Tshechu will happen from 24th-26th September.

𝔹𝕒𝕣-𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕖𝕕 𝔾𝕠𝕠𝕤𝕖
The Bar-headed goose (Anser indicus) is a species of waterbird that is well-known for its remarkable ability to fly at extreme altitudes during migration. It is a medium-sized bird that belongs to the family Anatidae, which also includes ducks and swans.

These geese have a distinctive appearance with a pale gray head, a white neck, and a brownish-gray body. They have a black line running from their beak to the back of their head and a black patch around their eyes. The wings and tail feathers are dark brown or black, and they have pink legs and feet.

Bar-headed geese are found in Central Asia, where they breed in high-altitude lakes and wetlands. During the winter, they migrate to the lowland regions of India and Nepal, flying over the Himalayan mountain range. They are known for their incredible ability to fly at altitudes of up to 29,000 feet (8,800 meters), making them one of the highest-flying birds in the world.

Scientists have studied the physiology of Bar-headed geese to understand how they are able to fly at such high altitudes. It has been found that these birds have larger lungs and more efficient hemoglobin than other birds, which allows them to extract more oxygen from the thin air at high altitudes. They also have a higher density of capillaries in their muscles, which helps them to deliver oxygen more efficiently to their muscles during flight.

Bar-headed geese are herbivores and feed on various types of vegetation, including grasses, sedges, and aquatic plants. They are monogamous and form lifelong pair bonds with their mates. During the breeding season, they build nests on the ground near water and lay clutches of 3-8 eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the young.

The Bar-headed goose faces threats from habitat loss and hunting in some parts of its range. However, it is considered a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to its large population size and widespread distribution.

In conclusion, the Bar-headed goose is a fascinating bird that has evolved to survive and thrive in some of the most extreme environments on the planet. Its ability to fly at high altitudes is truly remarkable and has captivated the attention of scientists and bird enthusiasts around the world.
