Nabji Lhakhang Drup Festival 26.12.2023

This annual festival takes place in a charming little village, Nabji from the 15th to the 20th day of the 11th month of the Bhutanese calendar.

It is a five-day event during which the monks and local villagers of Nabji, also known as Doling Drubchen, perform Pema Lingpa’s Terchams, or naked dances. Meywang or fire dance, Peling Gimsum Chams, Tshogyem, Pholay Molay dance, Tercham-Naked Dance, and many other dances are part of the festival.

The Tercham is believed to bless infertile women with a child and is performed by naked dancers with a facial mask at night, over a bonfire.

The Drup concludes with the display of Guru Tshengye’s Thongdrel.

The Drup of Nabji Lhakhang is claimed to be identical to the Jambay Lhakhang Drup of Bumthang.

Being a Buddhist country, the urge to seek well-being in spiritual and religious practice runs in the blood of most Bhutanese. In Punakha, Yoengu village of Talo Gewog is seeing an increasing number of visitors coming to collect what Bhutanese call Drukpa Kuenley’s Rueb, believed to be a sacred pill blessed by the Divine Madman. The supposedly sacred mud pill that can be found in the depths of soil has gained popularity among devotees in the last few months. However, this craze has the private landowners at the collection sites worried about soil erosion due to excessive digging. Landowners are now calling for interventions before the situation worsens.

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

The Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a stupa located in the Punakha District of Bhutan. It was built in 2004 by the Queen of Bhutan, with the specific intention of warding off evil spirits and bringing peace and harmony to all living things. The Chorten is a four-story, pagoda-style structure, and it took nine years to build. The hike to reach the chorten takes about 40 minutes to one hour and involves crossing a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River and then ascending a hill. The chorten is known for its unique architecture, including a golden spire and labyrinthine wall patterns, and it offers fantastic views of the Punakha Valley. Inside, visitors can see a 15-foot-tall statue of Vajrakilaya, one of the eight deities of Kagyé, as well as a golden Sakyamuni Buddha on the temple's roof. The Chorten is a place for spiritual protection and is not a site for communal worship, monastic retreats, or education. It is a popular spot for photography and offers a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.
