Nestled in Trashigang, the secluded district of eastern Bhutan, the hidden gems of Merak and Sakteng unveil a fascinating world where the Brokpas, nomadic yak herders, proudly display their remarkable culture and customs. Among their notable traits, their attire shines the brightest. The women wear red and white silk ponchos, red silk jackets adorned with intricate animal designs, and elegant red wool capes. Some may even sport braided black wool jackets as an additional touch of elegance. The men, on the other hand, wear roomy white wool trousers over leather or cloth pants, complemented by eye-catching red wool jackets and occasionally sleeveless outer garments crafted from leather. The Jakar Dzong, also known as the 'Castle of White Bird,' stands proudly above Bumthang town. This fortress played a crucial role in defending the Dzongkhag in its history, and served as the residence of Bhutan's First King. A remarkable characteristic of the Dzong is its distinctive design, featuring a protected passageway with two interconnected walls fortified by towers. This ingenious arrangement ensured that the Dzong's inhabitants had access to water even during a siege.

Prayer wheels are an example of Buddhist technology. This technology allowed the faithful to multiply the number of prayers they expressed by millions. This is because prayer wheels are filled with copies of mantras (sacred spells associated with particular deities) such as the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, “om mani padme hum.”

Thuenpa Punzhi
In terms of a symbol understanding in relation to Buddhism:
The elephant represents buddha’s disciple Ananda, the monkey represents disciple Mongulyana, the rabbit represents disciple Shariputra, and the bird represents buddha himself. However, the particular painting is mainly for peace and harmony in the society. Based on this, there was a short story about four animals adapted from Buddhist channel:

Once in a forest called kashika near Varanasi, there lived four animals, namely an elephant, a monkey, a rabbit and a bird. And they had a dispute over the ownership of the tree that they have been living under and fed. The elephant claimed, “Well, this is my tree because I saw it first.” To this, the monkey replied: “Now, elephant, do you see any fruits on this tree?” The elephant agreed that the tree was without any fruit. The monkey continued: “That is because I have been feeding on the fruits of the tree long before you ever saw it.” Next, the rabbit spoke up: “I fed on the leaves of this tree when it was just a small sapling, before the monkey ate its fruit and way before the elephant ever saw it.” Finally, the bird, who had been watching the argument, came forward and asserted: “The tree belongs to me because the tree would not have grown if I had not spit it out as a seed. I helped planting the seed that grew into this huge tree, before the rabbit fed on it, or the monkey ate its fruit, or the elephant saw it”. The elephant, monkey, and rabbit concluded that the bird was the first to know the tree. So, all of them bowed to bird and regarded it as the eldest brother. Then, the four animal became friends and decided to share the tree together.
It’s symbolic peace and harmony, faith and respect .

Chimi Lhakhang is a Buddhist temple located near Lobesa, about 30-minute drive from Punakha town. It was built by Ngawang Choegyel after the site was blessed by Lama Drukpa Kunley, famously known as the Divine Madman. People visit the temple mainly to seek fertility blessings from Lama Drukpa Kunley. Prayer flags adorn the path that leads to the temple from the Yuwakha village, and houses in the village have paintings of phalluses on their walls. It’s quite a sight!
