During the 116th National Day of Bhutan, His Majesty unveiled the vision and plan for a new city - the Gelephu Mindfulness City - which will be designated as a Special Administrative Region (SAR). The Gelephu Mindfulness City will become economic hub leveraging its strategic location and connectivity to South Asia and South East Asia.

This undertaking will lay the foundations for Bhutan's economic success through investments in, among many areas, green technology, education, infrastructure and wellness. In its design and implementation, the mindfulness city will embed principles of sustainable design and marry Bhutan's culture and tradition with new and emerging technologies. It will be a city with character and culture - a truly distinctive way to imagine a city.

No wonder everyone is excited and looking forward!

This huge development continues Bhutan's tradition of pioneering new ideas in development where Bhutan has demonstrated that it is entirely possible to adopt a different paradigm of growth.

Since the 1980s, Bhutan's development approach has been focused on the happiness and well-being of the people. Guided by 'Gross National Happiness' conceived by His Majesty the 4th Druk Gyalpo, Bhutan has seen immense strides in development. Bhutan graduated from the LDC category on 13 Dec 2023.

Bhutan's culture and traditions continue to be a centre-piece of our identity. Bhutan is a leader in environmental conservation and sustainability, and is only one of the two carbon-negative countries in the world and continue to be a global voice on 'climate change'.

Bhutanese architecture is strikingly bold and beautiful. From the massive dzongs (fortresses) to a rambling old farm house all structures incorporate the typical Bhutanese characteristic and style - large open attic space, wooden shingles to roof the house; whitewashed walls and wooden frames and windows painted colourfully with various traditional designs of religious significance.

A beautiful shot of the endangered black-necked crane, the only alpine crane species in the world, who make Bhutan their winter home as they escape the bitter cold up far north on the Tibetan Plateau.
Of the few areas they migrate to, the sprawling bowl-shaped glacial valley of Phobjikha is one of the most important roosting grounds for the birds. The birds come in mid-November and remain until early March. The locals regard the birds sacred and every November, the Black-necked Crane Festival is held to honour and celebrate the arrival of the birds.

First built in 1649 to commemorate the victory of the Bhutanese over the invading Tibetans, the Drukgyel Dzong in upper part of Paro valley has served as an important base for defense in the region. The dzong was destroyed by fire in 1951, and has now been restored to its former glory. It is an important landmark in Bhutan's history and is an attraction for visitors to Bhutan.
