Merbar Tso, the burning lake in Bumthang, is steeped in myth and legend. Known as Mebar Tsho in Bhutanese, it’s said to be sacred and holds deep spiritual significance for the locals. Legend has it that Pema Lingpa, a revered saint, discovered treasures hidden within the lake’s depths. The name “burning lake” comes from the belief that when Pema Lingpa emerged from the water, he was holding a butter lamp that continued to burn bright despite being submerged. This mystical event solidified the lake’s reputation as a holy site. Today, Merbar Tso continues to draw pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual solace and enlightenment amidst its serene waters.
