108 memorial chortens or stupas known as "Druk Wangyal Chortens" have been built in 2003 under the patronage of Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck at Dochula pass at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,200 ft) on the East West Road from Thimphu to Punakha as a memorial in honor of the Bhutanese soldiers who were killed in the December 2003 battle against Assamese insurgents from India.
