Ema datsi (chilli cheese) is the national dish of Bhutan. It is a simple stew made of a variety of chilies and a special cheese, yak cheese, called datshi. The chilies that are used in the ema datshi are really spicy and this is served over a bed of red rice.

When thinking about great food dishes, an Ema Datshi recipe and Bhutanese cuisine don’t really roll off the tongue. But this cheese chili recipe is full of surprises.

Tamchog lhakhang is temple that is dedicated to the 13th century saint Thangthong Gyalpo, the bridge builder. This temple is located across the river from the Paro to Thimphu. In order to get to the temple one must cross an iron chain bridge, one of the few remaining of the many that Thangthong Gyalpo built.

This is a private temple however tourists are allowed to visit if they are given permission. Crossing this very old bridge with its swaying and undulating movements can be quite an experience. The temple's location on the ridge and the high rocky barren hills which serve as it's backdrop makes this a good location to take pictures.

Truly Incredible ✌️

Prayer flags whip in the wind, flying across steep valleys and roads. Buddhist temples, stupa shrines and majestic fortresses called zhongs dot the landscape. Giant water-powered prayer wheels spin from tumbling falls. Farmers tend yaks.

The old Punakha Dzong photograph was taken in 1905 by John Claud White when he came to Bhutan to present Gongsa Ugyen Wangchuck (the first King of Bhutan)- who was then the Trongsa Poenlop- with the order of Knight Commander of the Indian Empire for assisting British to forge relations with then Tibet.
Punakha was then the capital of Bhutan until it got shifted to Thimphu in 1961.

Punakha Dzong is one of the magnificent dzongs (fortresses) with its cinematographic composition - built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel at the confluence of the two rivers.
Even today Punakha Dzong is a winter residence of Je Khenpo (chief abbot) - a tradition which was practiced since the olden days.
