Ara is equivalent to ema datshi in the world of beverages. It is made through fermentation or distillation of grains like wheat, rice, millet, barley or buckwheat, and its quality depends on the yeast used. While ara is predominantly clear, some variations feature a creamy texture. Although not widely available in restaurants and bars, ara can still be savored at select places. For an authentic experience, visiting homestays is the way to go, where Bhutanese families frequently store jars of ara for special occasions, extending their warm hospitality to their guests.

The 3-day Thimphu Tsechu Festival begins 24th September

Held in the Kingdom's central administrative and religious center, Tashichhodzong, Thimphu Tshechu is one of the biggest and grandest religious and social celebrations in Bhutan. Although the public attends the festival over the course of three days, monks make preparations months in advance. The day and night before the actual festival, prayers and rituals are conducted to invoke the deity. For three days, mask dances are performed, like the Guru Tshengye (Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche), Shaw Shachi (Dance of the Stags), and others. It is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the Kingdom’s culture and mingle with locals who are dressed in their finest gho and kira.
This year, Thimphu Tshechu will happen from 24th-26th September.
