An old grandma basking in the sun after a tiresome circumambulation of the chorten almost posing for this shot.

I asked her to tell me stories about her, she is here living with her children as she is old and her kids wants her back here with them to live comfortably and spend the rest of her life spending time here at the chorten circumambulating; and gaining merits not for herself but for her children.

She misses her village life, it’s how she have been living and it has become a part of her life, she misses her house, the fire place, her cows and the farm, even her cat!

Dochu La is one of the most beautiful places in Bhutan, it has 108 stupas where you can walk around in the clockwise direction and get to the top where there is the main stupa which gives you a panoramic view of the whole mountain ranges on a sunny clear sky, and if you happen to be on other days where you can’t see the mountain ranges; immerse yourself in the mist and mystery of the place by hiking little up to the meditation places, which will give you a beautiful view of the 108 stupas, do take a hot flask with you so that you can sip a hot tea or coffee while you take in the mystical atmosphere.

Historically the place is popularly known for the event which takes places in the story of the famous Lam Drukpa Kuenley The Divine Madman who meets the demoness of Dochu La, Sinchu La and Chele La, they then become one as Loro Duem as The Divine Madman chases her to now Chimi Lhakhang and subdued the demoness there.

The other significance of the Druk Wangyel Chorten is for the peace and prosperity of our country, and also to commemorate the victory of our country. @ Bhutan

Built in 1531 by Ngawang Chogyal, the brother of Drukpa Kuenley popularly known as the “Divine Madman”, the Dokar/Dogar/ Dobji /Dobrji Dzong is situated at an altitude of 6,600 feet on the way to Haa in western Bhutan.

It is said that Ngawang Chogyal followed the spring originating from the throne of Jetsun Milarepa in Druk Ralung, Tibet in order to select a suitable site to establish a Drukpa Kagyud centre in Bhutan. The water site was found suitable to construct a centre that came to be.

The dzong houses relics such as the statue of Jetsun Milarepa, Guru Langdarchen, Dungsay Dewa Zangpo, and Ngawang Chogyal while the gonkhang houses the Goem-Chamdal Sum: Mahakala, Mahakali and the Raven Crown.

The architecture back then was a time capsule in itself, giving us the visualization of how it was and how times have changed, how the function of the buildings now have changed and how our Bhutanese architecture is changing.

Paro Dzong from the palace grounds.

Perched on a hill slope the Dzong structure stands out as soon as you enter Paro, it’s the proportions which makes it stand out like a one solid monolithic rocks which is carved out on this hill side, which dwarfs the other structures around it.

Jangchup Chorten type - patterned on the design of a classical stupa, with a pyramidal pillar crowned by a crescent moon and sun. The feature that is distinct here is the outward flaring of the rounded part to give the shape of a vase (a pyramidal shape), unlike a dome shape.

Even though the chorten is an exquisite architecture and a monument, the landscape architecture seems to be absent, as if the project is incomplete, it would be nicer if there was more landscape design in those empty grass w**d spaces and could come up with utilizing the spaces by zoning into lawns, courtyards, water feature, pockets for meditation and other forms of buffer from the traffic noise and light pollution.

Thimphu Tshechu - the ceremonial ground by Christopher Benninger. The courtyard is designed with the concept of eight fold paths and the interaction of the people to the use of place. For me what I think is that any architecture is people related and it has to connect to people's needs, the courtyard needs soft scape so that when people are witnessing these events, in an open area with blazing sun/rain, there should be some soft scape buffer zones to make the atmosphere cooler, architecture is always about people's interaction with it. Other than that I don't think any other bhutanese or international architect could have done a great job like the master architect Benningers

Royal Textile Academy Thimphu, Bhutan : There are 2 entrance to the site, the entrance starts with wide stairs and the idea to this approach is to break down the transaction of the spaces; entrance, stairs, courtyard and to the two building opposite making the a balance of scale and proportions from the main building to the class rooms.

Royal Textile Academy Thimphu, Bhutan : The over all composition of the architecture bring us in light of the contemporary bhutanese architecture where the use of modern materials such as the high steel frames with glass, concrete and GRC replacing most of the bhutanese cornices, at the same time use of the tectonics to balance out the architecture into bhutanese contemporary architecture

Royal Textile Academy Thimphu, Bhutan : We can see clearly the intent of the architects approach towards achieving the medium of light into the building by keeping the bhutanese facade shell and a modern structure behind the facade
