Wake up to the rising sun lighting up the red and green corrugated rooftops of capital Thimphu, and the green surrounding hills, all the sharp edges softened by the warm, mellow rays. Thimphu makes one think of cardboard houses children make in school for science exhibitions and the kids would playfully paint them any colour they wanted.

Born on 16th Oct, 2016, The Royal Highlander festival marks the celebration of the birth of his Royal Highness the Gyalsey; 400 years of Shabdrung Rimpoche; and the Rabjung (60 years cycle) birth year of Guru Rimpoche. It shares the beauty and the wonders of Gasa Dzongkhag through its nature, history and its age-old tradition and culture. The traditional offering of Buelwa (Gift offering) with Auley (traditional epic poem/song recitation dances and recitals) makes it the only sensory experience of its kind. Performances by Layaps, competitions on highland animals including the yaks, horses and mastiffs make it memorable. The 5th Royal Highlandar Festival will be held in Laya from 23rd to 24th October this year.
