Paro Taktsang

The 17th century monastery built into a sheer Himalayan cliff face in the Paro Valley looks as if it were drawn from an Eastern fairytale. Paro Taktsang traces its history back to the ancient ruler Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye, who had the monastery built in 1692 to commemorate the spot where legend has it that the Padmasmabhava brought Buddhism to Bhutan while riding a tiger. While images make Paro Taktsang look completely inaccessible, in reality, the temple takes around three hours’ trekking time to reach up rocky, high-altitude terrain.

Welcome to beautiful Punakha Dzong in Bhutan
The Punakha Dzong (the palace of great happiness or bliss), is the administrative centre of Punakha District in Punakha, Bhutan. The dzong was constructed by Ngawang Namgyal, in 1637–38. It is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan and one of its most majestic structures. The dzong houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, including the Rangjung Kasarpani and the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the tertoen Pema Lingpa.

The Dzong is located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers in the Punakha–Wangdue valley. The source of the Mo chu river is in the northern hills of Ligshi and Laya in Bhutan, and in Tibet. The Pho Chu River is fed by glaciers in the Lunana region of the Punakha valley. After the confluence of these two rivers, the main river is known as Puna Tsang chu.

In view of the healthy climate in the region, Punakha is the winter capital of Bhutan. The head of the clergy of Bhutan with his entourage of monks spend the winter in this dzong. Jacaranda trees grow around the dzong, blooming with mauve flowers in the spring. Punakha is also the center of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge (Punakha Suspension Bridge) and is about 7.5 km (4.5 miles) by car to Chimi Lhakhang, the Divine Madman’s fertility temple.

Today, Bhutan has recorded a total of 761 bird
species. We are home to 52 globally threatened
species including 4 critically endangered species.
The 4 critically endangered species are: White-
bellied Heron (𝘈𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘴), Baer's Pochard (𝘈𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘺𝘢
𝘣𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘪), White-rumped Vulture (𝘎𝘺𝘱𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴), and
Red-headed Vulture (𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘺𝘱𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘶𝘴).

We have three top bird watching routes in Bhutan:

The 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐡𝐮 - 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐩 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐡𝐚𝐫 birding route lies
within an altitude range of 150 - 1900m, and
recorded a total of 262 bird species. The tiny Narphu
town saddles on the ridgeline at the base of the jaw
dropping Narphu cliff.

The 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠 - 𝐖𝐚𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐚𝐫 birding route lies
within an altitude range of 311 - 1960m, and
recorded a total of 291 bird species. This birding
route begins at the floodplains of Sarpang
Dzongkhag, climbing towards Tsirang Dzongkhag,
and descends to Changche by Punatshangchu.

The 𝐑𝐢𝐦𝐜𝐡𝐮 - 𝐆𝐚𝐬𝐚 birding route lies within an
altitude range of 1345 - 2817m, and recorded a total
of 204 bird species. This birding route passes
through the Jigme Dorji National Park, on the bank
of Mochu.
