End of SOE? Aeronexus to run Botswana charters from US and Europe

Charter specialist Aeronexus Corporate (ARN, London Stansted) is to operate high-end tourist flights from Europe and the US to Botswana’s Okavango Delta from November 2021 on behalf of South African tour operator Fly Okavango.

Flights will be conducted with Aeronexus’s VIP-configured B767-300(ER) which is fitted with 96 premium lie-flat seats. Aeronexus is FAA-approved and also has a worldwide Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), according to its website. The company is based near Johannesburg O.R. Tambo in Kempton Park, South Africa, and at London Stansted.

Stephen Becker, chief executive of Johannesburg-based Fly Okavango, said set package tours would depart from Munich (Germany) and West Palm Beach Int'l (US) to Maun, the gateway to the Delta, in November.

From May 2022, the European departures will switch to Aeronexus’s Stansted base. Original plans to leave from Stansted in 2021 had to be shelved due to UK COVID-19 restrictions.

Aeronexus will also switch to a larger 120-seat A340-500 (in the process of being registered) from May, to accommodate add-on flights from Maun to Cape Town. Private charter specialist FliteStar Private Jets, based in Knutsford, UK, will be available to transfer passengers in Europe and the US to the departure points if required.

Transfers from Maun to safari lodges and Victoria Falls will be handled by each participating lodge group’s preferred operator, Becker said. Tour packages will be offered in cooperation with andBeyond, Barclay Stenner, Belmond, Golden Africa Safaris, Great Plains Conservation, Natural Selection, Red Carnation Hotels Xigera, Wilderness Safaris, and have been endorsed by Botswana Tourism, according to the company brochure.

Becker said feedback from the market has been positive, especially in the last three weeks. Rates range from USD39,200 to USD48,200 per person ex-Munich; and USD45,000 to USD59,950 per person from Palm Beach, depending on the season.

From November, flights to Maun will operate as follows:

✔Munich from November 19 to November 29, 2021, and December 29, 2021, to January 5, 2022;
✔Palm Beach from November 23 to December 3, 2021, and December 21, 2021, to January 1, 2021.

From May, flights would operate as follows:

✔London to Maun, Victoria Falls, Maun, and Cape Town: High season from May 2022 to October 2022, and in December 2022/January 2023;
✔Palm Beach to Maun, Victoria Falls, Maun, and Cape Town: June 2022 to November 2022; and December 2022/January 2023. (CH-Aviation)

The fatal Sunday ' Elephant Attack' Happened inside Wildlife Protected Area ( Buffalo Fence.)

Fresh details on the Sunday elephant attack that left one man dead are emerging.

Three men were allegedly rounding up cattle when they were attacked by an elephant that killed one of the three men. The deceased is 34 year old man Makaleng village native who was resident in Moeti ward. The deceased was apparently visiting the two men at their cattle post whom he was with at the time of the accident.
The body of the deceased spent entire night inside the buffalo fence and this was apparently because movement is restricted and only authorities have permission in to the area.

Yesterday Maun Police station commander Orateng Chenamo who revealed that attack happened in Goroku cattle post. Goroku is situated along the buffalo fence which separate the protected wildlife area from
communal areas.

Today, The Okavango Express made follow-up enquiries with Maun Police Station commander to confirm fresh emerging details on the matter.

The most interesting fresh detail which has since been confirmed by Chenamo is that the attack happened inside the buffalo fence.

Further, Chenamo ruled out the poaching likelihood saying the fence has been damaged and people in the area often move inside looking for cattle that cross in.

Some sources alleged that a carcass of a zebra found near the area and was burned down by Wildlife officers at Buffalo fence gate but the police say they haven't heard about this nor whether the alleged carcass is related to matter or a different issue.

Further, Veterinary laws stipulate that no cattle are allowed within the buffalo fence as Foot and Mouth Disease control prevention . Infact, the buffalo fence was erected in 1982 as a requirement imposed on Botswana by European Union to prevent the potential mixture of carriers of FMD virus, the buffaloes, and cattle.

In terms of the law, all cattle that move inside the buffalo fence must be eliminated and there have been instances of cattle moving inside getting shot by Department of Veterinary Services as a precaution.

However, owing to inadequate maintenance and vandalism, over the years, the buffalo fence have been worn-out such that it has become a challenge to control human, cattle and even buffaloes in and out of it.
The porous state of the fence is therefore of wildlife conservation and veterinary concern.

What are chances of hunting down the killer elephant in an elephant infested area?

In terms of wildlife laws, wild animals that attack humans should get eliminated as in all recent cases in Ngamiland. This is a Government policy to ensure public safety.

Dimakatso Ntshebe, Regional Wildlife coordinator at Maun DWNP was not in position to confirm whether the elephant that attacked the man will be killed as investigations by Botswana Police are still ongoing.
However, he revealed that for a killer wild animal to be eliminated it depends on where it attacked the victim.

You will be picked up from your place of accommodation. We will transfer you to the mokoro station by 4WD open sided safari vehicle (about an hour) where you will meet your guide and poler. There are no facilities out there as you camp on an island chosen by your guide.

The Mababe village is situated on the banks of Khwai River, approximately 125km north East of Maun the Safari Capital. Wildlife is demanding its price. The inhabitants of Mababe are not able to grow crops due to the presence of elephants, buffalo and numerous antelope species. Neither can they keep life stock due to the presence of predators such as lions, hyena, wild dogs, cheetah, jackal etc.
The location of the campsites enables one to see most of the big five game: Lion, Buffalo, Elephants and Leopards other animals like Hippo, herds of Zebras, Giraffe, Wildebeest and others.

THE THREE CAMPS
DIZHANA
Dizhana is bounded by Chobe National Park and the Chobe triangle (NG 40) on the north and west respectively. While the multi-purpose concession areas NG42 and NG 43 are the eastern and southern neighbours, Mababe village is situated in the Western part.
The campsite provides six campsites. Toilets are placed under thatched roofs. The showers are in typical bush style do not have a roof. Hot water is provided.
XANAKGAEI
Xanakgaei campsites are conveniently located on the banks of the famous Khwai River about 5o kilometres south of Chobe National Park and about 80 km east of Moremi Game Reserve. We are settled at the Mababe concession which 125 km north east of Maun and is accessible by air and road.
The camp provides six campsites. Their location is probably the most romantic of all camps. Toilets are placed under thatched roof. The shower in typical bush style does not have a roof. Hot water is provided.
DIJARA CAMP
There are six campsites available at Dijara. As the camp is situated in a more open part of the Mababe Wilderness, game viewing from campsites is easier. Dijara boosts a game viewing deck available to all camping tenants.
Shower and toilets are screened by canvas. In typical safari style, the canvas shower buckets have to be filled and pulled into position by the visitors. No hot water is presently provided.

It was a great day yesterday, we had a wonderful day trip to Moremi Game Reserve with our tourist, we went to Moremi Game Reserve black pools where we witnessed a great war between a warthog and a crocodile as the warthog was coming down to quench its thirst, unfortunately there was a crocodile inside the pool, as the warthog was quenching the crocodile attacked him and the war began, as the warthog was fighting for himself, guess what happened!!! there came a Hippo to the rescue unfortunately it arrived too late as the crocodile drowned the warthog into deep waters and the warthog left this world in pain.
