The Reed Dance, also known as Umhlanga, is a traditional ceremony celebrated in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and some regions of South Africa.
It is a cultural event where young women, typically virgins, come together to honor the Queen Mother and present reeds they have gathered to her. The ceremony symbolizes purity, unity, and the preservation of tradition, and it is also a celebration of womanhood and the role of women in society. The event is a key cultural moment, showcasing the beauty, grace, and cultural heritage of the participating communities.

Sadly this time around, the tide was not favourable for snorkelling at one of the best spots in Bazaruto. Last year was truly amazing with a dive right in the middle of the ocean offering an amazing snorkeling experince right above a vibrant coral reef. We had a stunning underwater experiences nonetheless and got to see some of the best corals and exquisite seagrass beds where seahorses and starfish hide. What a spectacular Coral Garden view!
We start our day by spending few hours exploring the town of Vilanculos and digging into Mozambican culture. I have been to this town a few times now and today was quite a relaxed day driving around the town which only stretches 5kms and has a population of 24,000 residents. This really creates a tropical vibe because of the population concentration. Its new year so there are large pockets of parties and celebrations around the town. Its mostly the young people. Vilanculos is like a bustling metropolis. We continue to explore the bars and restaurants and also explore the different hotels. This is truly a tourist town.
