A male giraffe in Timbavati demonstrating two important and interesting natural history stories.

Firstly, demonstrating the range of movement of the cervical atlas-axis joint which allows them to extend their head absolutely vertically to reach the highest possible foliage. It is thought only Okapis (related to giraffes) also have this ability.

Secondly, as well as being a consumer while feeding, they may also play an important role as a pollen vector as they place their heads deep in foliage and browse from tree to tree.

Real and witnessed in nature.

Raw nature at its best!

'When it comes to feeding, there is no tolerance in the animal kingdom. These two big males where constantly growling at each other and pushing one another out of the way, competing for the best stop to feed from a giraffe carcass. Our Pangolin Photo Safaris guests were very lucky to witness behaviour like this on a recent Chobe, Delta & Kalahari photo safari.' Charl

Everybody is kung fu fighting...
Two Red-billed Spurfowls are battling it out right in front of us at Ker & Downey Botswana's Dinaka hide. I just managed to fit them into my frame.

Witkruisarend/Verreaux`s Eagle 🦅

"Unlike most other species of eagle, the Verreaux’s Eagle usually build their nests on cliff ledges as opposed to trees. The nest is quite large, measuring up to six feet across and is made of sticks with an inner lining of green leaves. The nest can be up to three feet deep and will sometimes have a whitewashed look to it, which is the result of the bird’s droppings. They will also sometimes build more than one nest and will switch from one nest to the other from year to year. Nest building or reconstruction usually takes place from March to April in anticipation of the female laying eggs in April."
