Nogatsaa Pans Lodge exceeded all expectations. James and Resego visited the camp and thoroughly enjoyed their stay. They raved about very comfortable and spacious tents, delicious food, a super friendly and professional team and the best choir in Botswana.

It's the perfect place for a relaxed armchair safari; guests can watch the animals come to drink without leaving the camp. During their visit, James and Resego saw hundreds of elephants, along with buffalo, giraffes, lions, sable, roan and even eland antelope and kudus.

Nogatsaa offers excellent value for money and can be included in a variety of itineraries, ideally combined with Khwai, Moremi, the Okavango Delta and also Chobe.
James gave it 10 out of 10 and said in his own words "I would be happy to stay here for a week and just enjoy the amazing view over the busy waterhole".

Resego and James recently visited the newly rebuilt Desert & Delta Safaris' Savute Safari Lodge for a quick sight inspection. The camp is stunning, with beautifully designed facilities, friendly staff, and the wildlife in Savute was abundant and diverse. They were thoroughly impressed with the lodge and gave it their thumbs up.

James' Top Highlights from our recent Ethiopian & SD Upmarket Safari

James' safari adventure kicked off with a helicopter transfer with Helicopter Horizons on the Long Ranger (James describes it as a 'beautiful machine') from Maun Airport to Natural Selection's Tawana. This charming camp set the tone with its attentive staff, always eager to assist, and offered superb game viewing. The camp’s excellent food, vibrant atmosphere, and many excellent wildlife sightings added to the experience.

The safari then took them to African Bush Camps' Atzaro, a beautiful and spacious camp. James praised it for its comprehensive amenities, which include spa facilities, a large pool, and a gym. The lodge creates a strong sense of community, and the wildlife sightings were special, featuring an aardvark during a night drive and wild dogs amongst the many.

The new Wilderness Mokete Camp, located in the Mababe Area, lived up to its name. The game was phenomenal, including sightings of cats, large herds of buffalo, and elephants. The food was on point, and the camp's facilities met our agents’ expectations. We can't wait for guests to experience this product—it definitely did not disappoint.

Their next stop was Selinda Camp, where the organisation by Great Plains Conservation was impressive. The team of professionals showcased their expertise, and the game viewing was phenomenal. Guests were treated to breathtaking sunsets, refreshing sundowners, and a seven-course tasting menu by the in-house chef, which received enthusiastic applause from the group.

The agents had an extraordinary safari experience, seeing first hand what Botswana has to offer.

Sandra recently led our agents on an exciting Ethiopian Airlines & SD Fam trip

Their safari began at Wild Expeditions Africa’s Karangoma with a relaxing boat cruise on the Selinda Spillway, enjoying breakfast while spotting plains game like eland and sable. At Sanctuary Retreats’s Stanley’s, the agents witnessed a dramatic scene where a pack of wild dogs took down an impala, only for hyenas to challenge them over the carcass.

Natural Selection’s Mokolwane had changed significantly in two weeks, now with water right in front of the camp, just proving how the water dynamics in the delta are constantly shifting.

They enjoyed an evening game drive and were thrilled to see a cheetah with her two young cubs; another sighting was of lions and for Marianna, it was her first time seeing lions (her face on the picture says it all).

At Deception Valley Lodge, the group was warmly welcomed and participated in activities like a bushmen walk and night game drives, spotting a range of wildlife including a porcupine, honey badger, and caracal.

Botswana once again proved to be an incredible wildlife destination, and our agents couldn't be happier with this memorable experience.

Botswana’s winter is already here, the mornings are quite chilly. While it doesn’t get as cold as in other parts of the world, guests can still expect some cold mornings and evenings. During the day, temperatures typically range from 20-25°C and can sometimes go up to 30°C. However, at night and in the early morning, it can drop to a brisk 5-10°C (with felt temperatures in open game-drive vehicles sometimes below 5 degrees Celsius).

We suggest using the “onion-style” approach to dressing, which means wearing layers. This way, you can add or remove layers as the temperature changes. If you're planning to visit Southern Africa in the next few months, make sure to bring warm clothing for early morning game drives and evening activities.

Here’s a simple packing list:

Warm fleece or softshell jacket: Great for those cold mornings and evenings.
Gloves: Keep your hands warm during early activities.
Beanie or buff: Helps retain warmth around your head.
Warm scarf: Perfect for keeping the cold breeze off your neck.

With the right clothes, guests stay cozy and can enjoy everything Botswana has to offer during the winter season!

We’re grateful for the opportunities to explore new places and share our experiences with you. Recently, our team visited Natural Selection's Mokolwane and owner- run Cha Cha Metsi Camp.

Mokolwane - Okavango Delta
Gao, Sandra, and Claire had a wonderful stay at Mokolwane. They had the rare chance to see two honey badgers, one with a snake, and two prides of lions. The area was full of zebras and various birds. They even saw elephants passing right in front of their camp. Claire mentioned that the lodge offers great value for money. Mokolwane currently has 7 tents and is accessible by helicopter. When combined with Hyena Pan or Meno a Kwena guests benefit from a free nights offer.

Cha Cha Metsi - Okavango Delta
The team then moved on to Cha Cha Metsi, where they saw hippos at the waterhole right in front of the camp. Game viewing was excellent, and they enjoyed mokoro rides. Horseback riding is available in the afternoons for those interested. Cha Cha Metsi offers an authentic safari experience, with a maximum of 12 guests accommodated in six tents. It is accessible by road or helicopter (if travelling by road guests can stop at Elephant Haven on their way back to Maun).

Today was a day of celebration in Maun. The inaugural Ethiopian Airlines flight touched down at Maun International Airport right on time, and we celebrated in the best way we know how: by ululating as the aircraft was hosed down, following the traditional first landing ceremony.

The long-awaited Maun route is a game-changer. This new connection not only opens up new opportunities for tourism to our region. We look forward to the positive impact this route will have on our community, providing greater accessibility for travelers.

Ethiopian Airlines will offer flight services to Maun Airport three times a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The flight from Addis Ababa to Maun will be direct, with the return flight including a brief stop in Ndola, Zambia.

The sky is the limit as we embark on this exciting new chapter, with hopes of many more successful flights to come.

Filmmaker Brad Bestelink, who has known the Mokolwane area for 20 years, continues to base himself there due to its high leopard density. He filmed his new Netflix documentary, Living With Leopards, in this region and recently shared insights about it. Learn more on his blog.

Filmmaker Brad Bestelink has known the Mokolwane area for some 20 years, and thanks to it having the third highest leopard density in Africa, it’s still where he chooses to base himself.

It’s also the filming location of his new Netflix documentary Living With Leopards, which he told us all about recently.

When Carina returned from Great Plains Conservation’s Okavango Explorer Camp, she summed it up perfectly: "The atmosphere was just right!" The lodge boasted a warm, friendly team that made everyone feel at home.

Their guide, BK, was exceptional. His extensive knowledge of the area and engaging personality made their stay truly enjoyable. Although the camp was small, it was comfortable and provided everything they needed. There was no pool, but who needed one when they could swim in the spillway? This unique experience, known as “wild swimming,” was a definite highlight.

The wildlife sightings were phenomenal. They witnessed three male lions on a zebra kill, a cheetah feasting on a warthog, and fourteen wild dogs playing in the water.

Faith is currently having the time of her life on an educational in Zimbabwe, finishing up at Chobe Bakwena in Botswana.

She began her journey in Victoria Falls, then continued to Hwange National Park, staying at The Hide, where she had
incredible sightings of elephants. She captured amazing close-up pictures from the underground hide, where they sat in the late evening.

She then proceeded to Matusadona National Park and stayed at Changa Camp, enjoying stunning sunsets and boat cruises on the famous Lake Kariba and managed to capture the famous dense woodlands while she was there.

One of the highlights was the warm welcome at Insika Lodge, where a tower of champagne glasses awaited their arrival. The cherry on top was witnessing the kindness and warmth of the staff. Zimbabwe is renowned for its talented guides, and Faith was not disappointed with the level of guiding she experienced. Their exceptional knowledge and passion for the bush, combined with the fun-loving Zimbabwean sense of humor, made her experience truly memorable!

Faith's safari journey is taking her to Old Drift, and she will be heading to Chobe Bakwena after a brief stop for site inspections.

Faith is having a great time during her safari and is enjoying every moment of her safari, experiencing some of the most exceptional areas in Zimbabwe.

CLAIRE & GAO'S EDUCATIONAL TO KANANA CAMP

Claire and Gao had an amazing educational during their one-night stay at Ker & Downey Botswana's Kanana Camp. One of their highlights was the sighting of the "sleepout leopard," known for her curiosity about the area's activities.

They reported that the lion pride in the concession is strong, with 22 members. The ladies saw them on two occasions.

Another fun moment was watching a hyena get surprised by an approaching lion and then later seeing the hyena come right up to their vehicle out of curiosity. Both moments were captured in short video clips—check out our stories to see these fun videos!

…And the surprise bush lunch? Absolutely fantastic! says Claire

Important Update: Kanana will undergo renovations similar to those at Okuti, focusing on structural improvements and refurnishings. Stay tuned for more information coming soon!

29/04/2024

We are happy to share some insights from our Reservations Manager Andrea in response to stories talking about the low rainfall in Southern Africa and how this might impact your clients’ experience this year when travelling to the Okavango Delta:

The Okavango Delta is one of the last real wildernesses on our planet. It has been going through various cycles for millions of years - humans have not been observing them for that long, but even in the relatively short time that humans have had an eye on the delta, very wet and also very dry phases have been observed.

And each of these phases always came with its own highlights.

When I travelled in the Delta in the early 2000s, it was also bone dry and in many areas resembled a savannah landscape rather than a marshland. However, the game viewing was absolutely phenomenal - not only did we see an incredible number of leopards and lions, but also cheetahs and wild dogs, which are generally not found in the wetter areas.

When I look at the meet & greet feedback that our team receives from our clients every day at Maun airport, the trend is definitely moving in this direction again. Our travellers are currently reporting cheetah sightings from camps where these were simply total exceptions and a rarity in recent wetter years.

Beks from African Bushcamps had a whole group of cheetahs on a termite mound near Atzaro on his Instagram feed just last week. Pom Pom is also currently producing customer feedback reminiscent of Chiefs Island in its prime.

As the water level drops, completely new migration routes are opened up. Animals can travel further out from the islands where they used to live and explore the delta - always following food sources and water, of course. This changes the areas. Duba Plains was world famous in the last very very wet phase of the delta for its number of very large prides of lions, which were known to hunt buffalo every few days. At that time the water around Duba was high, the animals stayed on the Duba Islands. Leopards were NEVER seen there - let alone wild dogs or the occasional cheetah. The Pantry Pride in particular had turned to warthogs as a snack and the warthog population was significantly decimated.

Then came drier years; the buffalo herds from Duba were able to extend their grazing circuit to Vumbura and the Mapula concession to the north - which of course made the visitors to these camps very happy. In return, we now also see leopards and occasionally even wild dogs at Duba Plains; the reliable rhythm of "lions hunting buffalo every other day" has of course also changed. The animals have adapted. The photo motives of our visitors too.

People often react anxiously to change, especially if a safari has been booked with specific expectations - but when it comes to the Okavango Delta, change is the defining essence of this dynamic landscape.

Of course, we in tourism have to rethink in times like these and can no longer offer "year round water activities" etc. as easily as in the last few years. However, this does not mean that the customer's travelling experience is compromised - at least not when it comes to experiencing true wilderness and great safaris.

There are never any guarantees on safari. Nor can we promise anything. We can only draw on past experiences, take current trends into account and try to draw the best possible conclusions for the upcoming travelling year. The general tenor is: when it gets dry in the Okavango, we have excellent game viewing opportunities.

The daily flood bulletin from the Hydrological Services Namibia show that the inflow into the Delta is promising, meaning the Delta can expect a good year despite the low regional rainfalls.

Meet Jane: our fierce Strategic Business Manager

Jane doesn't believe in beating around the bush—she's more of a "let's get this show on the road" kind of lady. Leading her team with a mix of fierceness and respect, she's the queen of action. And trust us, when Jane's in charge, you better believe there's a pot of gold waiting at the end of the rainbow—okay, maybe just some trinkets, treats, and outings for her team but close enough!

In her role as Strategic Business Manager, Jane oversees strategy, finances, and operations. She uses processes and financial tools to effectively manage the company's finances, ensuring the achievement of both short and long-term financial goals. Additionally, Jane ensures that agreed-upon strategies are thoroughly documented and successfully implemented.

Moreover, she takes the lead in driving change initiatives and provides oversight to the IT department, further expanding her range of responsibilities. Whenever Jane stands up to talk about audit week during staff meetings we can all feel her nerves wrecking. But she is so good at what she does that her passion for order, perfection are in par with what she does!

In spite of Jane's strict demeanor, she's actually quite a soft-hearted person, especially when it comes to children. As a devoted mother of two - Shaun and Chloe - she prioritises her role as a parent above all else. Her love for her children and family time knows no bounds.

When she's not busy conquering the corporate world, you'll find Jane embracing her inner outdoorswoman. Seriously, she's like a modern-day farmer in disguise—except with a killer Instagram feed filled with gardening adventures and snapshots of beautiful blooms. And don't even get her started on Italy; she's head over heels for the country and swears she'd pack her bags and move there tomorrow if she could.

Stubborn? Maybe. But Jane prefers to think of herself as tenacious—a real "dog with a bone" when it comes to chasing her dreams. She thrives on change, constantly questioning the status quo and driving everyone nuts with her "whys." But it's all in the name of self-improvement and if there's one thing Jane loves, it's a good challenge to keep her on her toes.

So, whether she's wrangling spreadsheets or chasing after her next big adventure, Jane Hrusa is a tough cookie and compassionate soul. With her passion for excellence, her love for the great outdoors, and her unwavering determination, Jane embodies the spirit of relentless pursuit, leaving a trail of inspiration in her wake.
