For many, seeing a wild dog is a bucket list moment. To see a pack on the hunt is simply unparalleled. These elusive predators rely on teamwork to bring down prey, with success largely due to their coordination during hunts. Unlike many predators that rely on stealth, wild dogs rely on endurance and stamina. They are known for their incredible ability to run long distances at high speeds—a tactic known as “persistent hunting". In Moremi Game Reserve, a bloody pursuit reached a dramatic climax at the water’s edge.

During this period, herds of elephants become more prevalent as temperatures and tensions rise. Water sources become less available and herds will soon begin jostling for space along the banks. Look forward to scenes teeming with activity. With a bit of patience and perseverance, the rewards of witnessing this dynamic behaviour are great.

Beginning and ending your day around a fire is one of the most soul-refreshing aspects of a safari. Camp Xakanaxa, set along the banks of the Khwai River and Xakanaxa Lagoon, offers this timeless experience in style. Did you know: As we encourage our guests to escape the hustle and reconnect with nature, the simple pleasure of watching the flames has affectionately been nicknamed "Bush TV."

The striped extravaganza that is Botswana's annual zebra migration continues to dazzle our cherished guests at Leroo La Tau. The lodge sits high atop the dry Boteti River Valley with a permanent waterhole right in front of us, drawing these monochromatic mammals, and other giants, to our doorstep. From our photographic hide, boma area, or from the comfort of your room's private deck, you get to witness this seasonal sensation while staying with us.

Don't miss Green Season (or "secret season") magic, usually from mid-November. As the rains arrive, the landscape transforms, bringing a burst of life. Animals breathe a sign of relief, able to feed on fresh vegetation and drink from seasonal pans filled by the rains. This period also marks the birthing season for Tsessebe, Impala, and Lechwe, attracting predators seeking vulnerable young. Expect vibrant scenes, dramatic clouds, and lush greenery—an ideal time for photographers.

Our six-night Green Season Discovery Package is perfect for this time, taking you to two of our revered properties: Savute Safari Lodge (the Savuti channel) and Camp Okavango (the Okavango Delta).

Leopard life in Moremi Game Reserve is especially exciting. While elusive, our expert guides know this land like the back of their hands. Unmatched knowledge of Moremi's terrain coupled with top-notch tracking skills make finding these climbing cats all the more exciting. Did you know: while we love to call these beautiful big cats spotted, a leopard's coat is decorated with rosettes—a shape that resembles a layered rose more so than a solid spot.

There's a childlike delight that comes with sleeping in places that aren't typical for grownups. Our sleep-out deck at Camp Okavango is one such spot, where adults get to relive the magic of pillow forts gone by, but with a touch more style. Perhaps, more than a touch. All the luxuries of our award-winning camp will be transported to our oasis under the sky for an experience underscored by opulence, comfort, and unobstructed quality time with nature.

The water levels in the Okavango Panhandle have been slowly dropping, as they do each year, triggering a remarkable migration within its intricate channels and floodplains. During this period, large numbers of sharp-toothed African catfish, commonly known as barbel, embark on an epic upstream journey within the Delta system. This Barbel Run is a natural wonder, as the fish gather in concentrated areas to feed, creating a spectacular fishing opportunity for guests at Nxamaseri Island Lodge. It's not just the barbel you're after, the ferocious tiger fish are prevalent during this freeding frenzy and make for amazing catch and release fishing! Pack your bags, grab your fishing gear, and dive into the thrilling angling adventure that awaits.

Water sources are mother nature's wildlife magnets, drawing in all sorts of creatures, great and small. As we continue into peak season, these life-giving sources dwindle and competition heats up. In Moremi Game Reserve, elephants are congregating, and the balance between life and water is precarious. The anticipation of rain grows, promising to bring much-needed relief. Until then, join us as we watch the action unfold.

Hyenas: misunderstood creatures with a knack for survival and a laugh that's truly infectious! Did you know: Hyena clans are led by dominant females, who are larger and more aggressive than males. This spotted hyena was, well, spotted in Moremi Game Reserve where Camp Moremi and Camp Xakanaxa stand as beacons of luxury and adventure.

One of the many beautiful things about travelling is that you get to live and relive experiences through storytelling. This, we think, is a fundamental life force that makes us distinctly human. It is also the reason we are truly thrilled that all of our Desert & Delta properties are rated as Travellers Choice on TripAdvisor. Thank you to all our cherished guests for sharing your experiences and inspiring others to adventure with us. We can't wait to share our love for Botswana with you—be it for the first time or time and time again.🌍

Behold our first photographed look at Savute Safari Lodge after its grand reopening just over a month ago. The lodge, which remains intimate with 11 rooms, now features fresh decor that mirrors nature's palate, a photographic hide, new fire place area, swimming pool, dining room and bar—among other detail-orientated delights. Our rooms are stunningly refined and feature indoor and outdoor showers. As for the views, we left that to the Savuti Channel (consistently breathtaking).🐘

From hatchling to first flight, we've had the joy of watching our resident Pel's Fishing Owls at Camp Xakanaxa flourish. You might recall the small grey tuft that sometimes popped its head from its nest. In the months since, this chick's feathered folks have been had at work. We've recently witnessed the mother owl teaching her offspring to pick apart fish. Now, not so small, the youngest member of this elusive family has spread its wings, delighting all with dips and swoops in the skies above our camp.

One of our Specialist Guides, Isaac Mpuchane, recently witnessed an extraordinary sighting: two male leopards mating with a single female leopard, consecutively. “This behaviour was a first for all the guides present and left us all in awe,” says Isaac.

“The scene seemed typical at first, as we observed the female and the larger male engaging in mating behaviour while a younger male lurked nearby. However, to our astonishment, when one male dismounted the female, what we thought was a subadult male immediately took his place.”

It’s been a few days since the first sighting, and the incredibly unusual behaviour has persisted. “The interaction defied our expectations and challenged our understanding of leopard behaviour,” Isaac adds.

Such a sighting underscores the unpredictability of wildlife and the endless possibilities that nature holds, making each day in Savute a new adventure.

Predators are maintaining their dominance in Moremi Game Reserve this peak season. Over the weekend, lions were on the prowl—with buffalo on the menu. In a clash of strength versus numbers, seven lionesses emerged victorious and will enjoy being well-fed, at least for the moment.

There's something profoundly comforting about the winter sun—a warmth that permeates your very soul. Each of our rooms at Camp Okavango has expansive windows that seem to whisper to those golden rays, calling them closer. Whether on your sun-drenched deck, in your cosy lounge, or sprawled on your bed, this is the perfect place to siesta between adventures.☀️

05/07/2024

It's peak season for apex predators in Botswana, and a group of wild dogs was recently seen near Savute with a litter of new pups. Unfortunately, we were reminded of nature's brutality when a group of sub-adult lions discovered the den. Lions, being larger and more powerful predators, overpowered the adult dogs, resulting in the loss of some of their pups. Where predators thrive, so does competition—a vivid reminder of the circle of life.

Our incredible guide, Isaac Mpuchane, captured footage of the aftermath. He says that he remains hopeful for the future of the pack.

Let’s talk walks! At Camp Okavango, Xugana Island Lodge, and Nxamaseri Island Lodge, nature walks are a fantastic guided experience for all our guests. The Okavango Delta has a handful of islands to explore, and we invite you to marvel at nature’s finest details with us. One example is Nare Island, where you can walk along “hippo highways”, witness the power of an elephant graveyard, and get to know an abundance of trees, bugs and birds as you go. A guide and a scout will accompany you for your absolute safety.

(Re-) Introducing Gorata Nyame, our NEW General Manager at Savute Safari Lodge! Her journey from waitress at Camp Okavango to Trainee Manager, Assistant Manager, Front of House Manager and now General Manager is truly inspiring.

Previously a special education teacher for deaf children, Gorata’s compassion, kindness, and advanced ability to communicate and connect have been instrumental in her success and in supporting & empowering her DDS team members at every point.

Gorata’s growth exemplifies our commitment to equality in the safari industry and demonstrates how like-minded people who care deeply can create real change. We are thrilled to see our female management teams expand alongside our entire Desert & Delta family.

We can’t wait to watch Gorata soar! Join us in commemorating her with a huge congratulations!👏
