Hurricane Earl- Chopped several trees and limbs and removed debris from the road and finally reached the property, an exhausting day. As the sun was going down we reached the camp to find the normally dry creek bed full with water. Son of Chapat roaring, I missed Actun Chapat by hours. It had flooded to historic proportions, and had flooded the entire cave system. Within 2 days as the Mopan River dropped the caves and creek beds dried up. The creek bed scoured clean by the millions of gallons of water, and lakes in the caves in all of the low lying areas is all that remains of Earls visit.

New discoveries being made still today. What might still be discovered in Actun Chapat & Halal?

This week, archeologists working at the Maya ruin site of Xunantunich announced the discovery of a tomb, presumably that of a Maya ruler.

Several conical holes "drilled" by hand and a harder stone into the formations near the skylight. These remain a mystery as to what they were used for. I wonder if there will ever be an answer for these, and the many other modified formations found throughout Actun Chapat.

After 2 weeks of constant rain the sun came out and made everything look possible; like driving into my property to the caves. Reality soon set in as the rover sunk to the differential and made going a bit rough. Think I will try again tomorrow!

The entrance of Son of Chapat, a smaller yet impressive cave that we rarely visit as there is not enough time during the course of our trip. Bob and Erica did take the time and of course took some impressive pictures. There are some beautiful formations throughout this cave.

The XMET caving group has been coming down for several years and mapping many caves, including Actun Chapat. Recently they gave me a map they produced, and then overlaid an image of a 747 jet so that my guests would get a reference of size when I show them the map. This is a view of part of the chamber, it is that big, and imagine when it is flooding!

Many events and great people since I last posted; but this one made me remember that I need to share this and many others with my Actun Chapat visitors. This month I had return visitors and new friends return with some of their friend’s to visit Actun Chapat. Dave Grcich brought a drone to see if we could explore some of the unreachable ledges. With his steady hand and perfect flying he was able to reach some of these ledges, and he got some great shots. But the pictures I have received still leave a lingering doubt that makes me still want to reach these high ledges and check them for myself. Perhaps Dave will come back and try again…Thank you Dave Grcich, Becky Grcich, Alec Davis & Erin Shay Davis

3/8/2015, 3 Miles and 5 hours in. Water passage continues, but Survey Stops for the moment. Oxygen level Hovers at 17.9% .C02 well into the "make you stupid levels", Todays challenges included scaling 20 foot tall Rim-stone dams, Hazardous ledge crossings along jagged limestone pits, I mean JAGGED

The first trip to check the air and passage.

Actun Chapat a true mystery of a cave with miles of cave surveyed by us. For several years we have turned back by the dangers of low oxygen. We have discovered no less that 3 Human Skeletons, and lots of random teeth, bones, artifacts and more. the cave has significant biology due to in massive bat population providing a enriched source of nutrients. Blind and pigment less Crabs, Cat fish and Ghost Shrimp, some endemic species, giant bat eating spiders, Giant Millipedes who also feed on bats, and other things to scary to talk about. Just ask 72 year old Mr. Williams, Son of a Bush doctor , who lives in the village nearest the cave. Today the Cave gods were good as we sampled air deep into the cave. Although still fairly dangerous, the air was survivable and we will be doing more testing this week. We strive to find its end.

The following week I got a call from Kit, assigned to the Ambassador asking to return to the cave with a co-worker and their wives. We explored the cave and with the help from some instruments that Kit brought along we discovered many new bones and teeth. I believe I got more from the trip than they did. I hope to see them again!

October 25th a memorable day. Carlos Moreno our USA Ambassador, along with his entourage, with Institute of Archaeology, including Dr. Allen Moore, and Gonzo from River Rat, made the arduous journey to Actun Chapat. Mud, rain, stuck vehicles, bees, and everyone had a great day. What an incredible group of people! A day I will never forget. Thanks to everyone for the opportunity to show you a corner of Belize not many get to see.

Two Rovers are better than one. Another caving trip to Actun Chapat with XMET. Picking up the sensors that monitor flooding events in the cave. And Actun Chapat flooded BIG time this year. While we were walking out I spotted a Howler monkey family. (no pictures as they would look like a blur, okay, okay I posted it)

Well...it has been awhile. I do believe it is time to hop back in the loop. I have done great trips with great people. I have also decided to start o work on my land regardless of finances. The lads love it there as do I, and this was a trip to find out the way there during the final days of the rainy season.

Meet your archaeology guide at the village of San Jose Succotz along the Mopan River where you will traverse 8 miles through old farms and tropical forest in the infamous land rover. There is only one trip a day and tours are private to Hidden Valley Inn Guests only. Your experience guide will share stories, legends and facts about the caves and the surrounding area. The History of the Maya will be told by your guide as you hike through the chambers of mysterious cave formations, terraces, alters, strewn with artifacts and Mayan relics. At the sky opening you break for lunch with a favorite burrito. Handmade flour tortillas, with a bean and / or chicken filling, a special sauce, with fresh lettuce, tomato and cilantro and of course hot sauce. After your return a cold soft drink, beer, or water to enjoy while you rest up for your return ride.

A little over a year ago I shined up the rover so Tommy Bahama clothing could do a photo shoot. After seeing this I got out the bucket and soap and gave the girl a good wash.

Hosted the staff from Hidden Valley Inn to a trip to Actun Chapat. A great day of caving and I believe that Actun Chapat gave them a new perception of caving.

Belize is still free of this desease. Over 22 species of bats in Chapat, the endangerd Ghost Bat is one. Hope serious cavers take precautions when they bring their gear to Belize.

New Jersey’s little brown bat population, once as high as 30,000 at the state’s largest hibernation site, hit a new low of only 600 in a recent count, as the population continues its deep spiral caused by a fungal disease sweeping through Eastern states.

Jeez, hard to keep up with all this. Web page, not yet...have done several trips to the caves, and every single one has been exciting, and a new experience, for me! Everytime I go it seems there is something new going on in the jungle or in the cave. I need to start posting more to let you know findings and what is going on.
