Divers Eye Boat Trips

Divers Eye Boat Trips Divers Eye Boat Trips will take you on an adventure to enjoy the magnificent wildlife in NW Skye Enjoy an adventure at sea with Divers Eye Boat Trips.
(12)

Sailing from Stein Jetty to Lochbay Islands, Coral beach, Waternish Point, Ascrib Islands, Neist Point and MacLeods Maidens, in dramatic seascapes, you can join a variety of trips from 1½ hrs to an Away Day Explorers Extravagnaza. Wildlife Watching is the summer favourite with regular sightings of whales, porpoise, occasionally dolphin and basking shark with a fabulous diversity of seabirds, includ

ing sea eagle, puffin and the full range of breeding seabirds enjoyed close up in seacliff colonies. Of course, seals are the young children's favourite, and they also love driving the boat and the easy childishness of Gordon the skipper! Add to that drop-offs, go ashore and explore, sunsets ceilidhs, castaway days, family-friendly trips, fishing and there is a great value trip to suit everyone. The full range of trips are detailed on our website with sailing times and a huge picture gallery of wildlife sightings too. With over 30 years experience at sea locally nobody knows the ‘nooks and crannies’ like we do and with a passion for wildlife and a warm Highland welcome, our visitors frequently tell us ‘we’ve done the rest and you’ve been best!’

We hope to meet you soon for an adventure at sea!

FIGHTING BONXIES
During our recent survey week, we had a few opportunistic seabirds following us. We reckon they mistook the survey ROV umbilical for fishing gear and were waiting on bycatch dinner! A couple of Bonxies were amongst the most diligent of the followers, but they took exception to a each other as a potential competitor for any food that arose. A fight ensued, which I hapened to catch on my phone. They are merciless. Having been on the receiving end of a Bonxie attack myself a few years ago (ashore, not while on the boat) I know just how persistent and intimidating they can be!

A BEAUTIFUL BLUEBELL DAY at Divers Eye Boat Trips.
Calumn MacKay took this gorgeous wee video recently of 'Elena C', heading out on one of its trips. We often point out this pinnacle while we're cruising by, so it's good for everyone to see the other view of it! Wildlife Boat Trips resume at the end of this week, when we finish our current dive expeditions.

KIT REVEIW
Swimmers come in all shapes, sizes and ages, and we often get asked about suits to fit ladies who don't fall into the size 10, hourglass shape, that most wetsuit adverts promote. Well done Waterpsort, for going the extra mile, as lets face it, very few fit the stereotype. This looks like a great suit, and if its like the Lomo suits we have had in the past, they will be a great buy! Thanks also to Heather for the review.

KIT REVIEW: Lomo Prime Wetsuit
Reviewed by Heather

FEATURES
The Lomo Prime is a triathlon and swimming wetsuit, and has three different thicknesses of neoprene across the wetsuit - 4mm on the front panel, 3mm on the back and 2mm on the arms underarms. This aims to give you the warmth where you need it most whilst also giving you freedom of motion.

SIZE AND FIT
I tested the Medium Wide C which according to the size chart is suitable for a height of 5’6″ – 5’8″, chest of 53-56″ and waist 47-51″. I'm a 50" bust and 45" waist (and 57" hip) and it fit me, but I would say it is more suited to someone who carries their weight on their torso. I carry more of my weight on my hips/bum/legs and I struggled a bit getting it over my legs and bum (I have 35" thigh). I also think there is more room in the chest area for someone bustier than myself! The wetsuit is currently available in short wide A-C and medium wide A-C fits (with the C being the largest).

PERFORMANCE
Once I had it on, I could swim in it pretty well without feeling too restricted (although I haven't yet done any longer swims in it). I tried it for the first time in a very chilly Windermere in March and the fact it made the very icy water bearable, is an excellent testament to its functionality as a wetsuit! It's also a very reasonable price in terms of wetsuits which, given the limited range of wetsuits at larger sizes, is fantastic.

OUR VERY OWN OCEAN LITTER ANGEL
Not the kind of wildlife we normally post about!

Jamie recovered this plastic litter - inflatable butterfly balloon from the sea off the Waternish coastline in an area where whales, dolphin, and porpoise feed, and also adjacent to a bird breeding colony. They present a huge threat to our wildlife.

So many stranded dead whales have stomachs full of plastic, birds’ nests are made with plastic, plastic has also been found in their stomachs after death too, ............. please do not release these balloons outdoors, intentionally or by accident, the results can be catastrophic!

This ballon by carries a responsible use warning, but this and doubtless others end up in the sea. Fortunately, no animal ingested this one.

CURIOUS GANNET, maybe hungry?
This Gannet spent some time following the boat at the weekend. Looking for lazy food treats, it probably gets fed from fishing boats. Laterly he was diving into the divers air bubbles, likely mistaking them for fish. Opportunists we guess! A few years ago we fed caught mackerel to a Gannet sitting tired on the rocks, and it ate, 8 whole large fish before stopping! Where did it put them you wonder! You can see why greedy people get called Gannets ;-) !

A good day on 'Project Seagrass'
We like to be actively involved in community science. Seagrass is an importat habitat that is diminishing, that supports much of the wildlife that we all enjoy watching. Project Seagrass with the help of volunteers is mapping all existing beds with the help of volunteers.

26/10/2023

PEEK-A-BOO seal pup.
The local Special Area of Conservation around Lochbay Islands is specific to common seals, and these islands are a very important habitat. Common seals pup in summer and they are always a delight to watch over the summer season. In recent years grey seals have also moved into the colony, and we saw the first very cute and fluffy white pup appear early this week. Yesterday it was playing peek-a-boo from behind the rocks on the offshore skerry where it is being reared.

You may see a white pup ashore on its own. Please don't approach it, Mum often goes off to feed and will return. If you are concerned about it having been abandoned, observe from a distance and if in doubt about its welfare, phone BDLMR https://bdmlr.org.uk/

Large groups of pregnant grey seal females return to traditional breeding sites on Scotland's rocky coasts in autumn to give birth. Pups are born with white hair that is moulted over the first three weeks of life, during which they stay at the colony before venturing out to sea.
