Loggerhead turtle is one of the 3 types of sea turtles (loggerhead, hawksbill, and green) nesting in Belize. Sea appear to have incredible navigation skills. They hundreds of miles between nesting and feeding sites. turtles are frequently found between barrier reef and coastal areas. They have strong jaws which allows them to feed on invertebrates (oysters, clams) that are attached to the reef and rocks. Although turtles live their life in the sea, they lay their on sand during specific months of the year. The air-breathing embryo would drown if the eggs were laid in water. Turtles lays shelled eggs which requires that they nest on land. They lay up to 100 or more eggs which goes through an incubation period between 50-68 days prior to hatching. After hatching emerge, the sea turtles makes their trip down the beach to the sea where the will call home.

The of Belize corals has an important symbiotic with the marine . Corals release mass amounts of which is released into earth's atmosphere. Coral reefs plays an important role in human life, as we breathe the pure oxygen they produce.

Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (CBWS) is the second largest marine protected area in Belize and is a part of the Mesoamerican Reef system, it was established in 1998. Corozal estuary is the largest estuary system in belize, it covers approx (72,000 hectares). The wildlife sanctuary in Corozal lies within a larger river to reef seascape. Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary plays an important role to the Mesoamerican Reef system. It acts as a settling basin for contaminants and sediments before they reaches the Belize Barrier Reef. The filtration function of the estuary in Corozal helps to maintain the health of Belize's reef, it's role is an important part of a transboundary estuarine system.
Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has an extensive mangrove system including coastal and cayes mangroves. The sanctuary is home to an important population of Manatees, it has a bull shark nursery area and has key birds nesting sites. Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary support local fishermen and tour guides in the area. Sarteneja is the most dependent of the marine resources from the area. Other coastal communities that benefit from Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary are Copper Bank, Consejo, Chunox and Corozal.
