Cruising in Halong Bay is a treat. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site 20 years ago, it has become one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations for good reason. Stunning limestone karst scenery explodes out of sheltered, shimmering, emerald waters. Overnight cruises on Chinese junks offer up limestone caves to explore, grottoes to kayak into, islands to hike across, and misty sunrises not to be missed. Recently, Vietnam’s first tourism seaplane launched, flying visitors over the area and giving them spectacular views of the bay that are not visible from a boat. Go there and do it all!

Mexico is so much more than beaches. San Miguel de Allende, in central Mexico, is a gorgeous colonial town with history around every corner. Set amidst a stunning landscape of mountains, canyons and lush valleys, it’s known for its intense cultural and artistic life and is an enclave for writers, artists and musicians. Festivals abound ; there’s always something going on, many celebrated with fireworks, parades and great excitement. And fantastic dining options – in courtyards and on rooftops, with this beautiful city lit up around you.

It’s Wave Season! The time of year when cruise lines try to fill their ships for the year and travelers have their pick of deals and cabins. If you’re thinking of cruising in 2015, consider booking before the end of March. Don’t know where to go or what to choose? We’ve cruised on several continents, from small river boats to ocean mega-ships, and are always happy to provide some pointers. Cruising is now so much more than crowded decks, tacky entertainment and buffet lines. There are cruises to suit every taste and bucket list experiences to be had. Cruising is cool.

Malta is one of the less-known Mediterranean destinations for North Americans, but definitely a worthwhile one. The capital, Valletta - a UNESCO world heritage site - was built in the 16th century and, with hundreds of monuments, is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world. Divers head to Malta and sister island Gozo in droves, eager to explore the spectacular underwater scenery - caves, tunnels, plunging cliffs - and clear visibility. Gozo is also home to the prehistoric Ggantija, a well-preserved temple complex built of enormous monoliths that local legend claims was the work of giants. Maltese cuisine is an interestingly eclectic mix of Mediterranean cooking, collected from the many civilisations who occupied the islands over the centuries. Consider a visit next time you cross the Atlantic.

‘Tis the season for ice hotels. Sculpted from thousands of tons of snow and ice and undeniably cool in more ways than one, there are only around 20 of them in the world. One of the most intricately designed and visually stunning ice hotels is right here in Canada. Québec City’s Hôtel De Glace is built from 15,500 tons of snow and comes complete with an ice chapel for weddings and vow renewals, and the Grand Slide for some speedy fun. Open January through March for a unique bucket list experience.

Uruguay is not the first South American destination that tourists rush to… and that’s part of its charm. It’s a progressive, stable and safe country that offers visitors the opportunity to experience real life rather than shrink-wrapped tourism. Cosmopolitan Montevideo, picturesque Colonia and party-till-you-drop Punta del Este with a ton of great eats thrown in – worth a trip south.

The airport is up and running, hotels are re-opening, and tourists are returning. Now is the time to get some fabulous deals and enjoy the Baja’s endless blue sky, white sand beaches and pervasive, impossible-to-resist, mellowness.

Portugal is typically not the first European destination that people think of, but what a treat it is. One blissful way to experience it is on a river cruise along the Douro from one side of the country to the other. Travelling between steeply terraced vineyards, charming towns unchanged for centuries, castles, mansions, and monasteries, you can visit four UNESCO world heritage sites, slip into Spain for a day tour of Salamanca, and sample the area’s sensational ports and tawny wines. Tourism in Tunisia is on the rise once again, so consider going before the crowds arrive. Easily accessible via Europe, it’s a compelling destination with multi-coloured mosques, Roman remains, beautiful beaches and even Star Wars sets in the middle of the desert. Now that’s unique.

When it’s winter here, it’s summer in the South Pacific. Tahiti, Fiji, Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa…. the names alone are enough to conjure up images of palm trees, fine white sand, and the clearest, bluest water anywhere. Go cruising, island hopping, over-water bungalow luxuriating, or simply find a patch of sand and hang. Combine with a trip to Aussie or New Zealand and have a true Down Under experience. It’s a different world down there, and well worth the trip…. especially in winter.

Puerto Escondido is one of the nicest beach destinations on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Although its hip factor is increasing, it remains an unpretentious fishing port and market town. While Playa Zicatela is the surfers’ mecca, Playa Carrizalillo is where you go to find your mellow. Accessed via a 150-step stairway, it’s a gorgeous cove with waters quiet enough for leisurely swimming and snorkelling, and beach shacks offering fresh seafood. The blissful Hotel Escondido is a hidden-away, oceanfront oasis with thatched villas and private plunge pools, where you drift off to sleep to the sound of the waves. Ahhh….

Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia is the largest volcanic lake in the world. This place is off the beaten path even for backpackers, but worth the trek. Stay at one of the shoreline guesthouses in a traditional Batak-style cottage and forget about the outside world for a while. Activities include hiking, biking and swimming in the silky smooth volcanically-warmed water; it feels like you’re swimming in liquid velvet. Or just chill. It’s a beautiful place to do nothing at all. ☺

Exciting news for Mexico lovers! For the first time Westjet Vacations is offering packages to La Paz this winter, as well as combos with three nights in La Paz and four nights in Los Cabos. La Paz is a peaceful yet interesting town with a chill vibe, spectacular beaches and excellent restaurants. Great fishing, snorkelling, diving and paddle-boarding are all easily accessible, as are sunset-view patios where you can sip a margarita after another ‘tough’ La Paz day. We love it so much that we go there several times a year, so for more info on where to stay and what to do contact us at [email protected]

Have you heard of Lego Beach? This is crazy. There’s a beach in Cornwall – Perran Sands – where hundreds of pieces of Lego wash up every day. 62 containers of it were washed off a ship 17 years ago about 20 miles off Lands End, and they have been making their way to the beach ever since. This one would be on every kid’s bucket (and spade) list!

With its stunning forts, palaces, temples, gardens and mountains, Udaipur has always been a big tourist draw in India. It’s also home to one of the world’s most romantic hotels – the Taj Lake Palace. Accessible only by boat, it appears to float mirage-like upon the waters of Lake Pichola. Approaching it at sunset is a bucket list experience like none other, when its white marble walls and cupolas turn gloriously pink. Inside, you’ll find open-air courtyards and lotus ponds, and rooms decorated with breezy silks and carved furniture. Magical.

Here’s a travel idea for the Labour Day long weekend: Bumbershoot, billed as North America’s largest urban arts festival. It’s a creative smorgasbord of live music, comedy, theatre, dance, file, literary arts and urban crafts, and runs in Seattle from August 30th to September 1st. There are loads of other activities in the city to keep you occupied, from a visit to Pike Place Market to climbing the Space Needle to dropping some bucks in the outlet malls. And the famous Seattle rain is usually nowhere to be seen at this time of year!

Calling all Vegas-bound foodies. For a spectacular upgrade from the buffet scene, consider an outing to Joël Robuchon. It’s the only Vegas restaurant to receive three Michelin stars, and offers up heavenly food in the form of four-, eight- or 16-course menus, and decor that transports you straight to Paris. Located in the MGM Grand, it has been hailed by some food critics as the best dining experience in the USA. Reservations are, of course, highly recommended!

For those who have already crossed off all the European favourites, how about a visit to Riga? The capital of Latvia has been designated the European Capital of Culture for 2014, and is a little gem. Located on the Baltic at the juncture of trading routes, Riga has an ancient history and rich culture. And oooh, the architecture. Riga’s entire history from 1201 to present is reflected in its architecture, including 19th century wooden developments and one of the largest collections of art nouveau buildings in the world, and its centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One way to get off the beaten track in Europe!

A room with a view. Really. Sleeping in a tree house in the Costa Rican rainforest is definitely one for the bucket list. At Tree Houses Hotel, for example, you can choose from a variety of tree house rooms all with breakfast included and as much Costa Rican coffee as you can drink. Plus easy access to their 70-acre wildlife refuge with waterfall and dipping pools. A getaway with a difference.

Manaus is on the map right now, being the location of the World Cup’s only stadium in the Brazilian rainforest. It’s also a popular stop on Amazon River cruises. Curiously, given its location, it’s home to the gorgeous Teatro Amazonas, one of the great opera houses of the world built during the height of the rubber boom using some of the finest craftsmen in Europe. It’s also a hub for many Amazon tour companies, so a place to pick up a little adventure with an overnight or two in the jungle.

New Zealand’s most famous walk, the Milford Track, provides a journey of a lifetime and a huge sense of achievement. From Lake Te Anau to Sandfly Point, it’s a 53.5 km route that takes in rivers, waterfalls, forests, mountain passes, icefields and some crazy suspension bridges. It takes 4 days to complete, spending three nights in huts. You have to book in advance, as only 40 independent hikers are allowed to start on any one day. Booking for the 2014/2015 summer walking season (October to April) opens in mid-July.

WestJet takes a big step tonight. It’s their inaugural flight from Canada (St. John’s, NL) to Europe (Dublin, Ireland). While not an itinerary that is convenient for all Canadians, given the necessity of getting to St. John’s, it’s WestJet’s first foray into the European market and helps them figure out what it takes to operate there. In addition, Dublin is the hub for Ryanair, a low-cost airline that can speed you off to other parts of Europe very inexpensively. It’s been known for a long time that WestJet has long haul aspirations; how great to see them take this step and hopefully, ultimately, create some more competition on the transatlantic routes.

Have you ever bagged a Munro? What’s a Munro? Munros are mountains in Scotland of over 3,000 feet in height, and named after Sir Hugh Munro who produced the original list of them. Currently, there are 282 listed Munros and “Munro bagging” is a popular practice amongst hikers. It’s not like hiking in the Rockies. Sometimes you’re trying to find your way along tiny sheep trails, sometimes you’re bushwhacking through heather, sometimes you are completely disorientated wandering through thick cloud…. it is Scotland after all. But the rewards are as frequent as the challenges, as the hills are typically bare of trees and the stunning views are wide open as you climb. Many Munros are perfectly accessible to tourists and don’t require anything more than the average amount of fitness. So if a trip to Scotland is on the cards this year, you might want to get out and bag one.

It’s a gorgeous little corner of Spain – the pueblos blancos of Andalucia. Perched on cliffs and cascading down hillsides, these whitewashed villages are a wonderful travel destination. Part Moorish, part Renaissance, their mazes of steep narrow streets, castles and cathedrals, and arches leading to small squares with authentic tapas bars invite you to wander at whim. The area is very accessible from Seville, Cadiz and Malaga. Rent a car and take your time, visit a couple or visit them all, simply enjoy being in another world.

The Copper Canyon is a different Mexico, far away from beaches, palapas and fish tacos. It’s a system of long, deep canyons four times larger than the Grand Canyon, and boasting one of the most spectacular train rides in the world that journeys from sea level to around 8000 feet via 86 tunnels and over 40 bridges. Stopping off along the way, you can stay in hotels that perch on the canyon rim, marvel at views from lookout points, travel down to the canyon floor, and even catch an adrenaline rush on a zipline. This one should be high on every Mexico bucket list.

A trip unlike any other – hiking through the incredible rice terraces of Banaue in the Philippines. These terraces were carved out of the mountains some 2000 years ago with primitive hand-tools, and are still being cultivated. Despite being a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s still not touristy and the local people are friendly and helpful. For those keen on the road less travelled, this one is hard to beat.

Here’s a thought for a more off-the-beaten-path Caribbean experience. Nicaragua’s Little Corn Island was voted one of the best places to travel in 2014 by Travel & Leisure. It’s a tiny, jungly, car-free jewel of a Caribbean island, where the lobster is cheap and the hammocks are plentiful. Tourism on the island is still in its infancy, but there is enough variety of funky beach cabanas to suit most tastes... even those who tend towards a little luxury. Definitely a place to indulge your inner Robinson Crusoe.

If you’re looking to mix European history and culture with some epic music this summer, give a thought to Zagreb. Croatia’s capital is a great place to spend time in its own right, with medieval architecture, lively street culture and edgy art; but from June 23-25 it’s also host to INmusic, an annual event that was voted one of the top three music festivals by National Geographic. This year’s headliners include The Black Keys and the Pixies, and tickets are crazy cheap by North American standards (just €48 for the three days, or €69 including camping).
