Yesterday was definitely an exciting day in politics for our province. I have never seen so much engagement among Albertans. It seemed everyone I talked with was so involved in educating themselves on the various parties platforms. I have never been super political. But I have learn more about politics in the past month than I ever thought I would.

My boys were both born under the care of midwives. And my births were truly amazing. When I found out many women in our province weren't able to have this same care, I became involved in ASAC (Association for Safe Alternatives in Childbirth) and MCAN - MaternityCare Consumers of Alberta Network. Two organizations that are driving change in our province.

We launched an Action Plan to address important Maternity Care issues. Our goal is to educate Albertans on their Maternity Care Options, look at rural populations that currently don' t have a lot of options and look at the midwife funding model. Many don't know what a midwife is or that our province is currently experiencing a lot of issues within Maternity Care. What many also don't know, is that addressing these issues will actually save the Government (taxpayers) money. In times where Albertans are being laid off and cuts are being made to important programs, why are we spending money we don't have to in other areas?

We have over 6500 signatures on our petition and our letter writing campaign and survey sent to all MLA candidates were so successful it resulted in a blanket statements from various parties. We made our results public and many voted based on these promises. We will now hold the new government accountable and work hard to address the lack of access to Maternity Care Options in our province.

With a provincial election being called today, the time to collaborate is now.

AHS stance comes at a time when the cash-strapped provincial government decided to cut overall health care spending.

But critics also say it reflects a persistent belief that midwifery is an elective, optional service rather than a mainstream, essential part of the health system.

The results of a flawed funding model is long wait lists, women denied choice, underserved populations left without midwives, and ultimately, increased health costs.
