Throw back Thursday…

Here are some pictures of young Jordan Kadlecik working hard at Tri-County Tree Service back in the day. He started working in trees at the age of 16 and is still doing it today.

Jordan recently became a Board Certified Master Arborist which is highest level of certification offered by the International Society of Arboriculture.

Jordan also holds many other credentials in the trade such as: ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Utility Specialist and he is an Ontario Qualified Utility Arborist.

Congratulations Jordan! Keep climbing to the top! 🌲🌳💯

Check out the uptake rate of this tree! This white oak had yellow leaves all summer due to a lack of chlorophyll. This is caused by a nutrient deficiency called chlorosis. Chlorophyll is a green pigment in leaves that enables trees to convert sunlight into sugars which is food for the tree. If the tree is not able to produce food it can decline and eventually die. In order for a tree to produce chlorophyll it needs micro-nutrients such and iron and manganese. The soil around the tree could be lacking nutrients or the nutrients may be present but something is inhibiting their uptake. Soil and foliar samples were sent to a lab to confirm a manganese deficiency in this case. Here we are injecting a manganese solution into the vascular system of the tree so that it will be in place for the spring. The tree will then be able to push out lush green leaves. 🌳

Throw back Thursday…

This is a photo of our great grandparents with their family circa 1930. Immigrants from Czechoslovakia, they settled in a small community outside Hearst Ontario called Bradlo. Note the pile of logs on the right side of the photo. The men were lumberjacks cutting wood in the winter in temperatures as low as -50c. Permits regulated timber harvesting. A single man was given a quota of 100 bush cords and a married man was allowed to cut 200 bush cords per season. The wood was skidded out of the bush by teams of horses and was cut to length and peeled all by hand. It was then hauled to the railway siding by horse and sleigh where it was loaded onto flat cars and taken to northern paper mills. They were paid $0.90 per cord!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives a week ago today. John was a true hero to his community serving as a volunteer firefighter on the Bayfield department. He was also a fellow arborist, a well respected and smart businessman and a hard worker. When we would meet each other on the road in the bucket trucks you would always flash the strobe lights and give us a big wave. I am going to miss talking to you about jobs, trees and equipment. You will be deeply missed. RIP 🌳🙏

On June 10th, the Vanderhaar family and Bluewater community suffered the tragic loss of Volunteer Firefighter John Vanderhaar while on-duty. This loss is felt deeply by our community. A celebration of life has been planned to honour John's life on Friday, June 23rd, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bayfield Community Centre (4 Jane St, Bayfield). Words of remembrance will be shared at 3 p.m.

Oak wilt has been confirmed in Ontario in the Niagara Falls area. Oak wilt is a vascular disease caused by a fungus which clogs the water transporting vessels and inhibits water transport resulting in the tree wilting and eventually dying.
The fungus is spread by nitidulid beetles commonly called "picnic" beetles. When these beetles feed on the sap of an infected tree, fungal spores attach to the the beetle. When the beetles move to feed on sap from fresh cuts or wounds on a healthy tree, the fungal spores are introduced and new tree is infected. Once a tree is infected the fungus moves through grafted root systems infecting all connected oaks. There is no cure for oak wilt.

What can you do to help prevent the spread?

- Do not prune or wound oaks from April 1 to September 1. The beetle is most active during these times. If an oak is wounded during this period apply tree wound spray or latex-based paint to seal the wound as soon as possible.

- If an oak tree is removed, pull or grind the stump right after removal. If pulling or grinding is not possible, paint the cut part of the stump to seal it off right away.

- Do not move firewood. Firewood or logs could be infected with oak wilt fungus and transportation can spread it. Buy your firewood locally and what you don't use should be left behind.

If you have any concerns with the health of your oak tree(s) contact a certified arborist.

We have confirmed oak wilt in a residential area in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This is the first confirmed case in Canada.

If you live in the area, check your oak trees regularly for signs of oak wilt, which include dull green, brown or yellow leaves; cracks in the trunk; white, grey or black fungus; and early and sudden leaf drop.

Oak wilt is spread naturally through the root or by beetles carrying fungal spores.

Report all signs of oak wilt to us immediately: https://bit.ly/3J7VSua
