Angie's Friday Fun Fact: Warm sun and swarms of bugs can only mean one thing - summer's finally here! We've talked about sunscreen already - although if you ask, I can whip up the post again - so now let's talk bug spray!

While we know that DEET works more effectively and lasts longer than other bug repellent, we also know that it can act as a neurotoxin - meaning it can inhibit your central nervous system functions.

Between 1961 and 2002 there were two adult and three child fatalities from DEET applications on top of 17 cases of "severe toxicity" - mostly in children. Symptoms included lethargy, headaches, tremors, seizures and convulsions to sprays containing as little as 15% DEET. A study done at Cornell University on Everglades National Park employees having extensive DEET exposure indicated that they were more likely to have insomnia, mood disturbances and impaired cognitive function than were their lesser exposed co-workers.

What else besides DEET can you use to keep the bugs at bay? Try using Soybean Oil based products or Neem/Catnip oil.

Always question what's in your products.
