In 1773, James Cook mounted the first UK expedition to the Antarctic with an all-male crew. Today, the UK's polar leadership is dominated by women.
Jane was interviewed alongside Jane Rumble, Head of the Polar Regions Department for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and Captain Milly Ingham, Commanding Officer of ice patrol ship HMS Protector, the first female captain to command a Royal Navy ship.

The science team on Bird Island have spotted six chinstrap penguin chicks on Johnson Beach - and they are adorable!

This is the first time in our recent records that chinstraps have hatched chicks there.

A little about Adelie Penguins...

Thanks to for tagging us in this shot of Adelie penguins leaving an iceberg. These brush-tailed penguins got their name from the French Antarctic explorer, Jules Dumont d'Urville. On discovering them in 1840 he chose to name them in honour of his wife – Adéle.

Joining IAATO is not just a matter of paying the membership fee. In line with our exceptional standards, would-be members must prove they’re as committed to our mission as we are before they can join the fold. This means a detailed application, passing the IAATO online staff training assessment, and delivering a presentation before IAATO’s veteran members after which their suitability to join will be voted on. Once a Provisional Operator gets their foot in the door, they are subject to a mandatory observation by an IAATO-appointed observer.
