Adventures Newfoundland , formerly Canoe Hill Adventures, was founded in 2002 and is dedicated to providing quality sea kayaking experiences and Boat tours in the Bay of Exploits, Newfoundland and Labrador. We also offer kayak rentals as well as support to those who prefer to go it alone. Soon to come will be the addition of a remote accommodations facility located at the Surgeon Cove Head lighthouse property on historic Exploits Island.

"Paul and Joanne were amazing hosts! Paul took us kayaking around the Exploits where we were delighted to find so many restored homes. It was special to see a former isolated outport being revived as a summer destination. After a couple of hours kayaking, we stopped and picked mussels. We enjoyed them as an appetizer before a delicious locally sourced home-cooked meal."

About the Surgeon Cove Point Lighthouse >>

Did you know that this incredible lighthouse and lightkeeper's residence was constructed on Exploits Island in 1911? 🌊 It once overlooked a busy shipping lane for ocean-going paper carriers, oil tankers, and freight carriers on their way to the seaport town of Botwood. The lighthouse stands 74 meters above sea level and offers spectacular views!

Meet Jason! 💪

Jason was born and raised in Grand Falls-Windsor and has been working as an outdoor adventure guide in the area for over 25 years. He's been a sea kayak guide for us for several years. Jason is a skilled paddler and woodsman - and loves identifying plants on his hikes. In his time away from Adventures Newfoundland, Jason owns and runs Hideaway Lodge, a big-game hunting lodge located in central Newfoundland.

Seeing as it’s iceberg season again , I thought I would post a couple of my favourites from the past, before the fresh ones arrive in our area .
We all see different shapes in icebergs and it’s always fun to use your imagination.
These two have been described as having a resemblance to oyster or clam shells, maybe the Sydney opera house , and a large soft serve ice cream . What do you think ?

When you're exploring Exploits Island, be sure to take note of the rock formations. 🪨 Most of the rocks you'll see are hundreds of millions of years old and were originally formed deep under an ancient ocean's surface. The bedrock making up the cliffs around the Surgeon Cove Lighthouse and Exploits Islands is basalt or volcanic rock formed on an ancient ocean floor.

"One thrill after another, courtesy of Paul, Joanne, and Mother Nature. Bald eagles soaring overhead, osprey watching us from the nest, fox sparrows chirping their loud songs. The humpbacks were plentiful and did not seem to mind us following their languid feeding pace. The kayaks are top quality and comfortable for a two-hour paddle around the neighborhood. Joanne kept our appetites satisfied with an assortment of tasty homemade creations. We felt like part of the family shortly after we arrived." - Andrew S.

Before starting his sea kayaking business in 2002, Paul Langdon spent 37 years as a wildlife enforcement officer in the provinces of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador. He monitored the large annual migration of sea birds from the Eastern Canadian Arctic and Greenland to Newfoundland.

The summer of 2023 was a busy time for us at the Surgeon Cove Lighthouse property on Exploits Island.
Builldings underwent scraping and painting , the generator shed got new shingles, steps got repaired and most notable was our work towards restoration of the cast iron lighthouse tower which is now 113 years old. We are trying to work from the catwalk down for practical purposes and believe it or not, the iron behind all that cruddy looking paint is in reasonably good shape. We removed broken windows , sourced new ones, put in wooden blanks for the winter , and covered her upper torso with a new red tarp made by Newfoundland Sail Sailworks . The project is a monumental task but we are committed. Work will continue this summer. Many thanks to Dirk Muir for his commitment and passion for the project, and his relentless pounding on the cast iron with hammers and scalers .
Also thanks to Shawn Lane for helping with the new shingles, to Jaqueline Stanford and her team from Kindness Adventuresfor their contributions of paint and a weeks work during a miserable weather period in June . And in case you haven’t noticed , we decided to add a few jelly bean row colours to liven the place up a little . The tower and light keepers residence will remain traditional coast guard colours.
And finally, thanks to all of our friends who volunteered their time to help us with this project. You are all so special!
