INCREDIBLE! A 37,500 ton 860 foot Great Lakes barge appears to "float" over Lake Erie! This is know as a Superior Mirage or perhaps an even more complex, Fata Morgana mirage. This is one of the more spectacular I've seen. This mirage is caused by atmospheric refraction or bending of light waves as they move through mediums of different density, typically layers of air with different temperatures. The result is the visual displacement of the object far above the horizon and in some cases, distorted, compressed or even inverted.

I’ve been told this barge is the Michigan trader owned VTB in Cleveland. Its 37,500 tons and measures 860 ft long.

This time of year, there is often significant differences or a sharp temperature inversion between the air over the cooler lake and the air directly above which creates the mirage. This photo was captured Sunday from Point Place in Toledo.
