Germany is doing well at the moment. But the major trends of the 21st century, notably globalisation, digitisation, demographic change, recent developments within the EU, and the energy transition all represent major challenges for us to tackle. This does not mean that we are having to reinvent the social market economy. But we must make use of our current position of strength to prepare for the future. In its almost 70-year-old history, the German social market economy has seen constant adjustments that have allowed Germany to remain one of the most competitive economies and one that can offer high levels of prosperity to its people.

First and foremost, we must invest in forward-looking technologies an innovation that will strengthen our core industries and our SMEs, and to promote digitisation in our businesses

The underlying principle of German economic policy
The social market economy lays the basis for economic and social security and a good quality of life in Germany and in Europe. It has been and still is a guarantor of growth and prosperity for all.
The principles of the social market economy also apply to the energy transition.This means that you need to design it in a way that allows for economic success and social security. The share of renewables in our electricity supply is to increase to 65% by 2030, which is a major leap. As we tackle this challenge, we need to make sure not to ask too much of our businesses or consumers. We must ensure that our energy supply remains stable, at a cost that does not harm our businesses’ ability to compete or our consumers’ ability to buy.

Free markets for labor,goods,services and investments.People are granted for the economic freedom to start businesses and pursue professions as they see fit.Firms must produce the goods that people want at a competitive price to survive.Free markets are known to be efficient and can create significant wealth.

The goal of the market economy is the greatest possible prosperity with the best possible social protection.It is about benefiting from the advantages of a free market economy, which include free choice of workplace, pricing freedom, competition and a wide range of affordable goods, while at the same time absorbing its disadvantages, such as monopolization, price fixing, and existence-threatening unemployment.This is why the state to a certain extent regulates the market and protects its citizens against illness and unemployment through a network of social insurance schemes.

Ludwig Erhard,the First German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs (1949 to 1963) under Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer,is seen as the father of the social market economy.As Director of the Economic Administration of the 'Combined Economic Area'he in 1948 declared the end of the controlled economy,against opposition from the occupying powers.

Social market economies aim to combine free initiative and social welfare on the basis of a competitive economy.The social market economy is opposed to laissez-faire policies and to socialist economic systems and combines private enterprise with regulation and state intervention to establish fair competition, maintaining a balance between a high rate of economic growth, low inflation, low levels of unemployment, good working conditions, social welfare and public services.The term "social" was established by Adenauer to prevent further reference to Christian socialism which was used in the early party agenda Ahlener Programm in 1947.
