Some much-needed improvements coming.

Ottawa is targeting “full deployment” of a new digital passport renewal system this summer - about the same time officials say the backlog of passport applications will subside anyway.

I am sorry that you may be experiencing longer wait times. With the easing of travel restrictions around the world, travelers are going on long-awaited holidays and business trips.

Our industry was devastated by COVID-19 and government travel restrictions. Unfortunately, it will take time for suppliers, including airlines, hotels, and cruise lines, to re-staff and fully recover to meet the current spike in demand. This regretfully may mean longer wait times when contacting me, and delays in my responding to schedule changes, cancellations, and other requests.

There is no quick fix. We are in a global labour shortage that deeply impacts our sector. Governments were not prepared for a spike in travel demand, and the continued impact of the pandemic and other global events weighs on the travel experience.

The most important thing to me is creating amazing trips for customers. I know that delays are impacting you and I apologize. Trust that I am doing my best to manage the situation as we work together as kindly and patiently as possible through this period.

So many great reviews!

GOOD NEWS for those needing to renew passports!

Service Canada has announced the reopening of all passport service counters across the country. They mark a return to pre-pandemic in-person service capacity, with a 40% increase in capacity.
The organization says capacity in waiting rooms has also been significantly expanded, and that it has also taken additional measures to simplify and expedite passport processing.
With pandemic travel restrictions being lifted around the world, Service Canada says its ability to serve Canadians swiftly was affected by an unprecedented volume of applications and the obligation to impose in-person capacity limits for both clients and staff to protect health and safety.
Service Canada says several measures have been put in place to make it easier for Canadians to access passport services, including hiring 600 new employees specifically to support the processing of passport applications. It says staff are working overtime and on weekends to increase processing capacity. This includes opening select Service Canada Centres on Saturdays for passport service.
As well, a simplified renewal process now allows applicants to renew an expired passport if it was issued in the last 15 years. The simplified process is also available to those who had their passport lost, stolen or damaged.
Applicants do not need to have a guarantor or provide their original documents, such as proof of citizenship or photo identification. They simply need two photos, two references, their completed form and the applicable fees. Service Canada says these changes make renewing a passport easier and faster.
Service Canada has also launched eservices.canada.ca/reservation/, an online appointment-booking tool that applicants can access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from their computer, tablet or cellphone to book their appointment online. The tool also directs them to the right location to submit their passport applications.
For people in situations where they can’t wait for an appointment, Service Canada makes the following suggestions:
-- Anyone who needs a passport within two business days must visit one of the specialized passport sites (Service Canada Centres – Passport Service) offering urgent pick-up service. Proof of travel is required.
-- Those travelling within 25 business days can use the walk-in service at one of the 35 specialized passport sites (Service Canada Centres – Passport Service). Appointments are recommended, and proof of travel is required. Please note that wait times at these sites may be long due to the current demand.
-- For anyone travelling in more than 25 days (or with no specific travel date), over 300 Service Canada Centres are available to receive passport applications in person. No proof of travel is needed. These applicants also have the option to mail in their applications.
Although processing times are currently longer than prior to the pandemic, Service Canada says 98% of Canadians who apply in-person at a specialized passport office currently receive their passports in less than 10 business days.

There are definitely some different New Year's traditions around the world. Here is one from Italy.

Italy

In Italy, s*x, alcohol, and food rules at New Year’s. There’s a cenone (the “big meal”) that runs for hours. Eating cotechino e lenticche (lentils and pork sausage) is common at this dinner, as it’s said to make you rich. Spumante sparkling wine is applied instead of perfume, while babies’ pinkies are dipped in the drink to suck on. Meanwhile, s*x is a must. There’s a saying: if you don’t do it on New Year’s Eve, you won’t do it year-round. Red kinky underwear is worn to bring good luck.

But it’s not all bacchanalian. There’s a bit of cleaning, too. Old things are thrown out of the window on New Year’s, usually including toilet seats. So be careful when going for a late-night stroll—that toilet seat might land on your head.

Cuba; New entry rules just announced, to begin Jan. 1, 2022

As part of an effort to speed up the check-in process at Cuban airports, Cuba's Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Tourism are implementing a new form to provide information in advance prior entering and leaving Cuba.

In the past, passengers were given these forms on board, but starting on Jan. 1, 2022, paper copies of the following documents will no longer be available:

International Boarding and Disembarkation Card
Customs Declaration Form
Traveler's Health Affidavit

All travelers must provide information online within 72 hours before departing for Cuba.

Once the information is provided, travelers will receive a QR code by email and must show an electronic or printed version of the code to authorities upon arrival.

“There is no doubt that this is a way to improve the travelers experience through the airport and to speed up procedures at the different points of entry, now passengers will have a stress-free flight and don’t need to hassle filling out forms on board," said Lessner Gonez, director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Canada.

Cuba has made easy to enter the country by eliminating quarantine and the PCR test upon arrival.

Now, incoming travellers must show their valid passport, tourist card (included), COVID-19 medical insurance and proof that they are fully vaccinated (all Health Canada approved vaccines and mixed doses are accepted).

If they are unvaccinated, they must submit a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before entering. Children 12 years of age and under are exempted from presenting a vaccination certificate or PCR test.

Fully vaccinated Canadians on a short cross-border trip of less than 72 hours will soon no longer have to present a negative PCR test, according to sources.

Puerto Rico
The U.S. island territory of Puerto Rico is the most highly vaccinated in all of the U.S.A.; it has fully vaccinated 74 percent of its 3 million people, according to the independent COVID tracking project Covid Act Now.
So, how did they do it? “It’s not their immense wealth,” wrote Jha, noting that Puerto Rico is not a particularly rich destination when compared to much of the U.S. “They’ve done this largely [by] not tying vaccines to politics. . . . All their political parties actively support vaccinations.”
People who are not vaccinated are required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Those who arrive without a test result will need to take a PCR or antigen test within 48 hours of arrival and quarantine until results are ready. Violators face a $300 fine.
