Millet Great War Veteran Pvt. William "Billy" Arrod Vanalstine.

The youngest son, and second youngest child, of Olive and Jacob Vanalstine. He enlisted in 1916 in Wetaskiwin, when he was only sixteen.
During the battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917, Vanalstine was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry, having been a messenger during the bombardment. It was because of this award that the army discovered the boy's true age, as it caused a senior officer to notice how young the boy looked.
His commanding officer had him transferred out of the trenches to the Young Soldiers Battalion (YSB) back in England noting he could come back when he turned eighteen. The Battalion was formed to protect underage boys that had made their way overseas, holding them in England until they could be sent home or turn eighteen. When his birthday came in October, he was not sent back overseas, as the November 11 Armistice ended the conflict. While millions of soldiers awaited their transfer home, the YSB were particularly known for being quite rowdy, and so that Battalion was promptly shipped home first.
In 1928, he married Winnifred Griffiths. They moved to British Columbia, where he died in 1972, aged 72 years.

Did you know❓that following World War One, the "Next Of Kin Kits" were mailed out to the family of those who died in service. The kit contained any medals earned by the Soldier, as well as a Memorial Plaque (sometimes called a "Death Penny"), scroll and King’s message.

With nearly a million dead for the British Army alone, the Memorial Plaques are still commonly found today, while the fragile scrolls survive less often and are becoming rarer.
This "Next Of Kin Kit" was issued in 1919 for Driver William Albert Croston Rothwell, who died in August 1917, aged 23 years, and later donated to the Millet Museum.

Throwback Thursday πŸ“·πŸ”™ πŸŽƒ & Happy Halloween!

This circa 1950s photo is borrowed from the Provincial Archives of Alberta photo collection, and shows the local kids of Little Smokey, Alberta in their Halloween costumes.

In the mid 1800s, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween celebrations to Alberta, with the act of dressing up becoming popular in the 1890s. In fact, the first recorded use of the term "trick or treat" was in the Lethbridge Herald in 1927 ! πŸŽƒ

Did you knowβ“πŸ¦· In our collection we have a small bottle of Rexall brand Toothache Drops, with the active ingredient Chloroform!

Typically used for many years as an anaesthetic and pain reliever, the use of it in medicines fell out of fashion in the 1950s. 🦷
This bottle specifically if from the mid 20th century, and was donated to the museum in the 1980s.

Did you know❓These glasses were donated to the museum in 1988, and are apart of the initiation portion of the fraternal group, The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). We do not know the specifics of what the goggles were used for, but they look pretty unique!
