From my first safari in 2019 to reconnecting with Tanzania during the pandemic, this path has been about embracing adventure and forging deep connections. Boho Afrika was born out of a desire to showcase Africa’s beauty and culture through curated travel experiences and artistic expression. In case you ever wondered why your phone needs to be on airplane mode during take off and landing. In my experience, this rule is broken on every flight I’ve taken. I admit I often find myself giving dirty looks to passengers next to me. Hey, that in case something happens is enough reason for me to comply.

Pushing the limit to send that last text before takeoff could have consequences.

The ferry ride from Mombasa towards Diani beach is so short. You blink and it’s over. Made me wonder why they don’t have a bridge already to make things simpler. Although the process wasn’t to long for us to board the ferry in our taxi.

Tangawizi and chai (ginger tea). Soothing, warm, and spicy.

Tanzanian drink tea often. Either this way or a milky sweet chai. It is common to be offered tea each time you visit someone’s home. It is even bad manners for a host not to offer any drink or food when you pay a visit to their home.

LA GRANDE MIGRATION DES GNOUS

Phénomène unique en Afrique, la grande migration voit chaque année deux millions d’animaux, principalement des gnous et des zèbres, effectuer une boucle de plus de 3 000 km à la recherche de meilleurs pâturages.

Tout commence en mars-avril lorsque s’annonce la saison des pluies. Les animaux quittent alors la région du Ngorongoro pour monter vers le nord. D’immenses et interminables files d’animaux se forment en direction du Serengeti et la région de Grumeti qu’ils atteignent en juin-juillet. En août, ils atteignent la frontière du Kenya et livrent sans doute le spectacle le plus fort et le plus dramatique de leur migration : le passage de rivière Mara où les animaux s’entassent sur les rives, se jettent enfin à l’eau au risque d’être attrapés par les crocodiles qui les y attendent. Gnous et zèbres resteront environ deux mois au Kenya avant d’entreprendre la route du retour courant octobre, Ils rejoindront les plaines de la région du N’Gorongoro en novembre-décembre où commencera une autre aventure, celle de la mise-bas des jeunes.

Nous nous assurons d’être dans le cœur de l’action à chaque étape de cette aventure.

Very interesting. For those who think dressing like a superstar might get them a free flight. Although I still think that if you show up looking like you just rolled out of bed (very tempting when you have long flight), you might not get priority.

The truth is this: Airlines have a pretty straightforward system for doling out upgrades, and it has very little to do with what a passenger is wearing.

Happy women’s day!

My message to other women:
« Be strong, be fierce! Don’t hold anything back. You deserve to be heard and seen. Being in Africa has taught me even more about our resilience and perseverance as women. It has also taught me to trust my instincts more and just be myself. Obviously there is still so much work to do to get equal opportunities and respect. We can only get there if we lift each other up and take our place. Let’s do this! »

The central unit of Maasai society is the age-set. Young boys are sent out with the calves and lambs as soon as they can toddle, but childhood for boys is mostly playtime, with the exception of ritual beatings to test courage and endurance. Girls are responsible for chores such as cooking and milking, skills which they learn from their mothers at an early age.

Sharpening the seme

A seme, simi or ol alem is a type of dagger or short sword used by the Maasai and Kikuyu peoples of Kenya in East Africa.
They have a distinctive leaf-shaped blade, with a relatively rounded point. Scabbards are generally made of wood covered with rawhide, and dyed red.

The traditional Maasai house was in the first instance designed for people on the move and was thus very impermanent in nature. The houses are either somewhat rectangular shaped with extensions or circular, and are constructed by able-bodied women. The structural framework is formed of timber poles fixed directly into the ground and interwoven with a lattice of smaller branches wattle, which is then plastered with a mix of mud, sticks, grass, cow dung, human urine, and ash. The cow dung ensures that the roof is waterproof. The enkaj or engaji is small, measuring about 3 × 5 m and standing only 1.5 m high. Within this space, the family cooks, eats, sleeps, socializes, and stores food, fuel, and other household possessions.

Villages are enclosed in a circular fence (an enkang) built by the men, usually of thorned acacia, a native tree. At night, all cows, goats, and sheep are placed in an enclosure in the centre, safe from wild animals.
