Yesterday, the switch was turned off on our website. Could not justify keeping it on. We are sorry to see it go, but the time has come. We are keeping this page active, as we look forward to hearing from the friends we have made over the years.

We thought we would let Kaniuk turn off the switch. He was sad.

🌟 Happy New Year from Grandma’s Elephant Hideaway! 🌟

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas filled with joy, and that you’re ready to welcome 2025 with style and positive thinking for the future.

We wanted to share an update with you, our valued family, friends and guests. Over the next couple of months, we’ll be deactivating our website. While we had hoped for changes that would allow us to resume taking bookings, it seems that won’t be possible at this time.

For now, we plan to keep the condo for family and friends to enjoy. Family means everything to us, and we’re exploring ways to ensure we can continue to care for the condo and cover its expenses. Since October, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful travel nurse, and this may be the path we follow moving forward, leaving it empty during the summer months.

We’d still love to hear from you! Our email address, [email protected], will remain our main point of contact, so don’t hesitate to reach out anytime. Your messages always brighten our day. We will also keep this page to post periodic messages and updates on our adopted Elephant, Kaniuk.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your support. We truly appreciate each of you and are so grateful to have shared this journey with you.

Please share our listing. We do not want to do this, but we have no choice. Prefer a hockey family, or someone that only wants from the end of August until May 31. Can even be shorter (min 90 days).

I went into Airbnb to remove our listing, and a new rating was released. Not only are we a guest favourite, but also in the top 5% of eligible listings. So many listings still here in Penticton (we actually blocked ours off from May 1 on) still operating. One guy who lives in another Province is showing all four of his listings - obviously does not qualify. Breaks my heart, but we just can't stay listed and blatantly break the rules. We can host friends, so please reach out.

We leave proud. Thanks, Airbnb for being a great platform to get us started with so many great friends and repeat customers.

This email is reaching you with heavy hearts from us. After four years of absolute joy, we have been officially told, despite operating legally, that we must close Grandma’s Elephant Hideaway due to the new regulations imposed by the Province of BC. The closure will take effect April 30. Most of you know why we started this business - in memory of my mother and to have a place where our kids and grandkids can stay when they visit. As you can imagine, this impacts us hard – we loved what we did and our guests. So many of you have become friends and family. I am so proud of what Debbie has accomplished - she is the best host as far as I am concerned.

We plan to keep the property as our kid's home away from home for as long as we can. No idea how long we will be able to do that - maybe a year or two. We hope you will not give up on us and continue to reach out and like our posts.

We will plan on doing a minimum of 90-day rentals as of September 1st once the kids have had time to visit. 90 Days is now the shortest we are allowed to do. If you know of any snowbirds, hockey families, etc., please let them know about our place.

We want to thank you all for everything. Your support, kind words, hugs, the odd glass of wine, beers at the bar in the casino, learning that the legion meat draw is great fun, and many laughs have given us some great memories. We will never forget any of the great guests that we have been so happy to have.

They would immediately reply to any issues or questions we had, providing hotel service in a comforting Airbnb setting. We felt valued and well cared for. The condo’s cleanliness was impeccable. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could require - from an air fryer to blenders and an extensive selection of spices and essentials like baking paper. With every rental we have had, we have been very proud to support affordable housing in Penticton through support of various initiatives and also in supporting the Sheldrick Trust and our adopted Elephant, Kainuk born on the same day as my Mom (but 77 years later), July 4.

This makes us sad, but nothing will stop us from still feeling proud of what we do for our guests. Today, we welcome our repeat guests arriving from Calgary to once again experience the Nickel Plate cross-country ski area. Deb has gone out of her way for what is likely the last time, to decorate, and to create such a welcoming home (in our family secondary home) for our visitors to Penticton. We have included a nice growler of Cannery Anarchist (guest's choice and our favourite - at other times, we provide a nice local/Naramata wine), some local snacks, local jams, local soaps, our signature cookies, and so much more.

We will transition to mid-term rentals (minimum 90 days) as of September 1, 2024. If you are looking for any specific dates, please don't hesitate to reach out. Rentals for 90 days or more will only be available from September 1 to June 30th each year. This is our family home, and we will need it to accommodate periodic visits from family throughout the summer months.

We are sorry this is happening, as we loved this business and our amazing guests, but it is not our decision.

We have been proud and legal supporters of Penticton. Since the day we started we have been licensed, own one unit that we purchased to allow our family to enjoy what we love about Penticton, and have been a part of Visit Penticton since we first started sharing part of our home with guests from around the world.
