GREAT NEWS LAST NIGHT. 😁

Just wanted to thank our amazing Coast Guard, PAL Aerospace and SAR teams who worked endlessly over the last 48 hours to help find the crew of the Elite Navigator. (Safe and sound!)

Also to local fishermen who joined in the search and rescue mission!

Job well done; Thank you all from NL Maritime! It was a long and busy few days but what a wonderful outcome!

As we look out over Pilley's Harbour on Pilley's Island, knowing that the "big" water (the fearsome North Atlantic) is just the corner of these islands in our small archipelago we are hoping and praying for the safe return of the crew onboard the Elite Navigator.

The Atlantic Puffin is the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador. And, there are many places to observe them in their natural habitat. Here's a list of ten to get you started.

1. **Witless Bay Ecological Reserve**:
- Gull Island
- Green Island
- Great Island
- P*e P*e Island

2. **Elliston**:
- Dedicated puffin viewing site near Bonavista

3. **Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve**:
- Primarily known for gannets but also hosts puffins

4. **Funk Island**:
- Off the northeast coast

5. **Baccalieu Island**:
- At the tip of the Bay de Verde Peninsula

6. **Cape Bonavista**:
- Near the town of Bonavista

7. **Gros Morne National Park**:
- Coastal areas within the park

8. **Fogo Island**:
- Smaller surrounding islands accessible by boat tours

9. **Red Bay**:
- In Labrador, with opportunities to see various seabirds

10. **Quirpon Island**:
- Off the northern tip of Newfoundland

Pufflings have started hatching!

Pufflings usually start hatching the first to second week of July! After hatching, both puffin parents diligently care for their puffling, feeding it small fish several times a day. These adorable chicks stay in their burrow, growing and developing. When ready to leave the nest, the puffling ventures out at night to avoid predators, making its way to the sea where it will spend the next few years before returning to breed.

From the "deck view" overlooking Pilley’s Island harbour, the reflection on this July 1st is Memorial Day in Newfoundland. Remembering July 1, 1916.

The tranquillity of the harbour contrasts sharply with the horrors faced by soldiers at Beaumont Hamel. Their bravery and sacrifice, leaving home to confront unimaginable adversity, have granted us the peace we enjoy today.

The calm waters and gentle winds remind us of the freedom their ultimate sacrifice secured. As we cherish these moments, we honour their legacy by fostering peace and remembering the profound cost of our liberty. Their courage and determination continue to inspire and humble us.

May we always hold them in our hearts.
