Update on the Status of the Billy Diamond Highway
Nemaska, Eeyou Istchee (August 9, 2023)
There is still considerable work that must be done by local Public Security Teams and SOPFEU crews in fighting forest fires throughout the territory. Rains which are to begin this afternoon throughout the territory and continue until Saturday August will allow for lower travel restrictions throughout the territory as of August 10th, at 6am.
People are advised to be aware of the serious consequences that could arise from failing to respect public warnings, restrictions, and advisories. It is also very important not to interfere with SOPFEU operations on the territory as they continue to combat forest fires in the region.
Travel restrictions from now until 5:59am August 10th, 2023:
The map above shows in red where the road network is CLOSED TO
ALL TRAFFIC:
• Wemindji Access Road
• Billy Diamond Highway km 590 to km 394
The map above shows in orange where traffic is restricted essential services, humanitarian reasons and for residents returning home:
• Community Access Roads of Waskaganish, Eastmain,
• Billy Diamond Highway from km 394 South to km 50
• Trans Taiga road LG-3 East.
Travel restrictions as of August 10th, 2023 at 6:00am:

• Community Access Roads of Waskaganish, Eastmain, Wemindji, Chisasibi
• Billy Diamond Highway km starting at km 50 towards the North
• Trans Taiga road to LG-3
• Muskeg Road and EM-1
Due to the elevated threats to the Wemindji Access Road, travelers to Wemindji are advised to contact the local Public Security Team to acquire the most recent status of the access road and be advised of any special procedures that may be required.
As conditions can change quickly people are asked to exercise extreme caution when traveling. SOPFEU Teams and Local PSOs will continue coordinating daily to do what can be done to improve conditions.
