Have you heard what is happening with the Great Lakes? Researchers from Michigan Technological University are using the Armada 8, an uncrewed vessel from Ocean Infinity, to help map the Great Lakes in high definition as part of the Lakebed 2030 initiative, reports Cottage Life. Much of the Great Lakes’ current mapping data is outdated, posing risks to boaters. ⚠️

While the Armada 8 operates autonomously, it is supported by a crewed chase boat. Both vessels use sonar to create 3D maps of the lake floor, revealing details like boulders, shipwrecks, and submerged infrastructure. This new mapping effort could help locate lost vessels and aircraft in the Great Lakes. 🚤🌊
