Starting this week, Canadians will face new entry requirements to enter the United Kingdom, to be followed later in the year in Europe. The electronic travel authorization (ETA) process takes effect Wednesday (Jan. 8) in Britain and is expected to follow by mid-2025 in European Schengen zone countries. Notably, the ETAs must be completed (at least the first time) before arrival in the destinations.
The most imminent change starts on Jan. 8, from when eligible non-European visitors, including those from Canada, the US, and Australia, will need to obtain the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before travelling. The digital application process costs £10 ($18) and will allow for multiple journeys for a period of two years or until the person’s passport expires – whichever comes first.
