Open Fortress aims to support its members by encouraging collaboration and sharing space, as well as creating and showing physical performance in non-traditional “Dance World” settings. Since it's inception in 2015, Open Fortress has taken form within various festivals and venues in and near Toronto including Long Winter at the Great Hall, Camp Wavelength at Artscape Gibraltar, Test Drive at Dance
makers, In the Soil Festival in St. Catherines and Cultura Festival at Mel Lastman Square. Open Fortress is a community of dancers whose main objectives are to collaborate, share rehearsal space, and create and show physical performances in non-traditional dance settings. We believe in exposing the city to dance ideas through unconventional performances, and interventions in public spaces where one would not normally bear witness to contemporary dance. We are interested in constructing performances where dance is the main form of expression. We use improvisation, believe in consensual participation, and try to choose honesty when performing in public.
