Paddle Kew Gardens tennis courts to R.C Harris filtration facility:

There were some big swells on the lake today, but it only added to the excitement! What a nice paddle with George, we totally enjoyed the weather and water today.

Reminder - The lake is still very cold so always ware a life jacket, it would be impossible to put one on after capsizing. Also stay close to shore and try to keep your bow facing oncoming swells.

Canoe Cherry Beach to Toronto Islands!

This little island paddle is a beautiful gem of a day trip, it’s the perfect paddle. But there are some important safety precautions that must be considered.

Crossing the channel is dangerous because of the open water. Lake Ontario is extremely cold and capsizing could easily create a life or death situation. High winds and larger boats can make the channel very difficult for novice paddlers. Always check wind conditions prior to crossing, 10km winds are usually manageable, anything above that can make the crossing difficult.

Be sure to kneel in your canoe for extra stability. Life jackets are essential! Paddle directly into waves, large waves hitting the side of your canoe can swamp you in the blink of an eye.

However, once you manage to get your canoe into the secluded channels that meander through the islands it’s heavenly. As specially in the early morning.

Pro tip: There is a secret public marina with great food and coffee on the island, it’s the perfect little spot for a bite to eat. There are also two private boating clubs that are not open to the public. But the marina most certainly is!

T’was a bit of a challenge to rig up a double canoe roof rack, I used some metal rail from Home Depot. An amazing mechanic helped jimmy it to my existing roof rack. But now we can just go and paddle as a family!!! How cool is that?? Two canoes, four people, and endless possibilities of adventures together ❤️🫎

Totally free now, it’s simply amazing. Paddling is freedom. We did the lovely little trip to centre island from cherry beach today. It’s a beautiful paddle, but take care to check wind conditions before attempting the stretch across the channel. Very dangerous with anything over 10km winds. Also watch for boats that may not be looking for canoes.

The most versatile vehicle on earth is the canoe. You can go anywhere if you aren’t in a rush, what a great way to travel. Bring some food and water and sunscreen. Simply perfect.

Nith River Canning to Paris April 28 2024 Water Level 8.5 Cubic Metres Per Second:

The Nith River is a shoulder season paddle (Spring or Fall) depending on water levels. Yesterdays paddle was nearly too low, but still most enjoyable! The final set of rapids leading into Paris Ontario were very manageable at these levels, but still required our attention.

Important Notes: This is an intermediate paddle, some experience and knowledge of paddling in rapids needed. These rapids can be dangerous because of cold water in Spring and Fall. They are Class 2 technical rapids that are difficult to scout as the river reaches Paris. At higher water levels, an open canoe could easily swamp in the high and technical waves and turns. We pulled out at Lion's Park and the take out is not overly obvious. I am not sure what lies down stream, so take care planning your pull out! The pull out is on the right side of the river but it might be challenging with higher water levels.
We took a $40.00 taxi ride back to Canning to collect our parked car. We simply used a bike lock to chain our Canoe to a medal fence in Lions Park.
The paddle took us 2.5 hours at a moderate pace. We found the river levels slightly low and our brand new Esquif Prospector 16 acquired a few more bumps and scrapes along the bottom.

Wild life was abundant on this lovely Sunday paddle. We saw turtles, bald eagles, osprey, blue heron, ducks, gees, pipers, vultures, deer, musk rats, a carp swimming up stream, a brown trout. It was a highlight of the trip.

The drive was roughly one hour and forty five minutes from Toronto's east side to Canning.
