The Government of Canada has acknowledged Family Fishing Weekend (FFW) as a "celebration of the great tradition of sport fishing."

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Subject: FN0510-Recreational Family Fishing Weekend - June 14 to 16, 2024

They will be providing, "an opportunity to fish in tidal waters at no cost". Continuing on; "unless you require a salmon conservation stamp, for the weekend dates of June 14 to 16, 2024, only."

"This is applicable to Canadian residents as well as non-residents, including adults, seniors, and juveniles. If you hold a valid 2024/25 BC Tidal Waters Sport Fishing (TWSF) Licence, you must carry it when you are fishing during the Family Fishing Weekend."

"Please note that all Conditions of Licence, closures, and catch restrictions are still in force. Before going fishing, ensure that you refer to the conditions of the 2024/25 TWSF Licence as well as the online BC Sport Fishing Guide"

⚡️That was fast! HALI OPEN FEB 3, 2024 - be sure to read the notice on the DFO site, in case it changes. LIKE AND SHARE! Today, this came in:
Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0084-Recreational - Fin Fish (Other than Salmon) - Halibut - Fishery Opening February 3, 2024

Effective at 00:01 hours February 3, 2024 until further notice recreational fishing for halibut will open coast-wide with the following measures in effect as noted below:

Licensing:

The 2023/2024 Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licences and Conditions of Licence, are in effect until March 31, 2024. The 2024/2025 Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licences and Conditions of Licence will be in effect from April 1, 2024 until March 31, 2025.

A subsequent Fishery Notice will be released prior to the start of the 2024/2025 Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence which will announce the recreational halibut fishing measures from April 1, 2024 onward

Limits and sizes:

Effective at 00:01 hours February 3, 2024 until March 31, 2024:

The daily limit is one (1) halibut per day.

The possession limit for halibut is EITHER of:

---- one (1) halibut measuring 90 cm to 126 cm in length (69 cm to 102 cm head-off),
OR
---- two (2) halibut, each measuring under 90 cm in length (69 cm head-off).

No person shall retain a Halibut greater than 126 cm head-on length (102 cm head-off).

Head-off measurements are made from the base of the pectoral fin at its most forward point to the extreme end of the middle of the tail.

Annual Limit:

No person shall catch and retain more than ten (10) halibut in the aggregate from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024.

All halibut retained by the licence holder between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024 shall be immediately recorded on the 2023/2024 Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence, or, if mobile access is immediately available, the licence holder may record catch in the National Recreational Licensing System or on an approved third-party app. The area from which each halibut is caught and its head-on length shall immediately be recorded.

The exceptions to these openings are:

Areas 121: No person shall fish for or retain halibut, rockfish and lingcod in Area 121 outside the 12 nautical mile limit seaward of a line that begins at 48 degrees 34.000 minutes and 125 degrees 17.386 minutes W and continues south easterly at a bearing of 116 degrees True to a point at 48 degrees 28.327 minutes and 125 degrees 01.687 minutes W.

Areas 121: Closed to all finfish, year round in the waters of Swiftsure Bank. Those portions of Subareas 121-1 and 121-2 inside a line that begins at 48 degrees 34.000 minutes N and 125 degrees 06.000 minutes W, then true east to 48 degrees 34.000 minutes N and 124 degrees 54.200 minutes W, then southeasterly to the International Boundary, outer perimeter at 48 degrees 29.618 minutes N and 124 degrees 43.553 minutes W, then westerly following the International Boundary perimeter to 48 degrees 29.605 minutes N and 124 degrees 56.190 minutes W, then northwesterly to the beginning point.

What a year 2023... Almost surreal that it's coming to an end soon. Thanks everyone for coming out to Cowichan, Ucluelet and Nootka!

Time to rinse and repeat. I will be taking bookings for winter steelhead trips from now until March 25, 2024.
We will be drifting the mighty Cowichan river by raft. Fly fishing and float fishing for these beautiful beasts.

Winter saltwater charters out of Ucluelet will be offered until March 25, 2024 aswell
Winter springs and Crab!

Spring/Summer saltwater charter dates still available between May 10, 2024 - Aug 31, 2024

2023 is gonna be an amazing season! We've started it off drifting the Cowichan River with some great guest. Now we are watching the herring spawn and prepping bait for the saltwater season.
Trolling Chinook over a morning coffee and then anchoring for some larger halibut is just around the corner.
I've got some availability between May 7th- July7th so call and reserve a date now!
