Last day of our Tulip Time Cruise. We were in Rotterdam this afternoon and Kinderdijk this morning. Rotterdam was heavily bombed during WWII and approximately 75% of the city was flattened. As a result there are many new buildings. Kinderdijk is a UNESCO site. There are 19 working windmills still on sight. They are used to pump the water out of the canals so that much of the agricultural land in The Netherlands does not flood. People actually volunteer to live in the windmills. In exchange for low rent they volunteer their time to work the windmills.

Back in The Netherlands this morning. Walked around Middelburg. Some of these buildings look old, but were destroyed during WWII and rebuilt and designed to fit in with the buildings that were not destroyed. The city wanted to retain its pre-war look.

Docked in Nijmegen today. 2 excursions today. The first few pictures are from Heeswijk Dinther Castle. Definitely not the most elaborate castle, but it still has a moat, an interesting story of a family feud and a room with a ceiling with china plates. The last couple of pictures are from the town of Arnhem. The church’s steeple was destroyed during WWII and has now been rebuilt. Also the remains of the city wall left from Roman times.

Just a few of the many pictures I took this morning at Keukenhof Gardens. They plant 7 MILLION bulbs by hand each year! It was amazing! And also one glorious picture of the sunset last night from the top deck of the Riverside Debussy as we overnighted in Amsterdam.

In Grenada yesterday and Antigua today. So many spices to choose from in Grenada. Beautiful beaches. All of these islands have remains of old forts. They have all been fought over by countries hoping to increase their empire. Visited a pineapple plantation today then onto Freyes beach, where I collected seashells on the white sand beach. Amazing sunset as we sailed out of Antigua.

Loving all of the beautiful beaches in Tobago today. Can’t wait to come back. Our driver said that the Caribbean Sea was unusually rough today and stirring up sand. Normally the sea is clear with all of the various colours of blue and you can see the reefs.

In Amsterdam today. So many narrow houses. Most of these houses have been converted into multi unit apartments. The staircases are so narrow that many of the houses have a hook on the top of the house so that furniture and appliances can be hoisted up through a window when people move in.

In Cologne this morning. The Cathedral is massive. From our tour guide it sounds like it is always under restoration. Some pictures from the outside. Inside there are intricate mosaic tiled floor and once again the stained glass goes on and on. Construction started in 1248 and it is the highest twin spired church in the world. The cathedral supposedly holds the relics of the Three Kings who visited Christ after his birth.

In Bernkastel many of the streets have grape vines growing between the houses. There are some great examples of half timbered houses in this town. Even one that is only 6 ft wide. Taxes are charged by the footprint of your main floor.

In Heidelberg Germany. Visited the ruins of the Castle which looks over the town. The castle was repeatedly attacked and ultimately destroyed by the French in the War of the Grand Alliance. In 1764, after some repairs, the castle was heavily damaged by 2 lightning strikes and caught fire. Also some pictures of the old town.

Pictures from Strasbourg, France. Walking tour of the city this morning. There is a Notre Dame Cathedral here too, with a whole bunch of stained glass windows - they just go on and on. This afternoon we went to the Maginot Line which was built near the German border. It was a series of underground tunnels built to protect France from a possible invasion from Germany after the events of WW1.

In Breisach, Germany yesterday. We went on an trip up into the Black Forest to a museum which preserves original homes. One from as far back as the 1600 that the family was still living in up until 1980s. The homes seem large but often the combined their living quarters with their barn and shared the home with more than one family. Had some Black Forest cake and ham, YUM

Left Lucerne this morning for Basel for the start of our Avalon River cruise on the Rhine and Moselle rivers. On the way we stopped at Mount Pilatus. We took the gondolas up to the top. This is where we listened to the Alp Horn players. After taking in all of the beautiful panoramic views we headed down on the Cogwheel train. This is the world’s steepest cogwheel railway.

We took the train to Bern and attended the temple. In our faith the temple is a sacred place where we can learn more about how to more closely follow Jesus Christ. When we arrived it was rainy. By the time we came out it was hot and 30 degrees. We wandered around Bern and took a few pictures. There were lots of people on the streets as there was a festival going on. Bern is the capital city of Switzerland.

Took the train to Lauterbrunn, then changed to a Cog Wheel Train which took us to Wengen. It is such a pretty town perched on the side of the mountain. It is a ski town in the winter months. From Wengen we took the tram up the side of the mountain. Chris and I rode on the top of the tram for unobstructed views. When we arrived we were greeted by a herd of milk cows. The cows wear cow bells of different sizes and shapes and as a result they make different sounds. They reminded me of wind chimes. We hiked from the Wengen Mannlichen to the Kliene Scheidegg area and boarded the Cog Wheel Train for the ride back down.

Left Lugano this morning and took the Gotthard Panorama Express to Fluelen. There we boarded a steam ship which look us from one end of Lucerne Lake up to Lucerne. Once in Lucerne we jumped on another train to Interlaken. Will will be spending the next 3 nights here and using this as our home base to explore the area. Such a pretty country, and it continues to amaze.

Early this morning we left Zurich. We took the train to Chur and then got on the Bernina Express. We were able to see some beautiful mountain vistas. We got off the train in Turino, Italy grabbed some lunch and took the bus to Lugano. Bus drivers must have nerves of steel. We met up with a big truck on the mountain switchbacks and only had a few inches to spare. Tonight we are in Lugano, staying in a hotel right across from the lake.
