In lieu of cycling on a wet & windy day to the top of Mt Ishizuchi, the highest peak in western Japan, our trusty guides arranged Plan B, a stop at a waterfall, snack time over an open fire in a traditional Japanese house, and a lunch of noodles with wild boar sausage (dressed with “traditional” parmesan cheese and Tabasco sauce) all in Ishizuchi national park on the island of Shikoku.

As a traveller, I could only ever daydream of one day being a writer of guidebooks. And Lonely Planet was the pinnacle of that dream, always like the coolest place one could ever have an author credit. Well, after a ton of research and writing all last year, here I am, a Lonely Planet guidebook author. The highlight of the experience was working closely with my co-authors on the Atlantic Canada and the Canada wide guidebooks. Couldn’t ask for better colleagues. I learned so much from them, and together I think we killed it! BTW, online book sellers got a name wrong: congrats to the Atlantic team Jennifer Bain, Cathy Donaldson and Carolyn Heller!
