As a traveller, I could only ever daydream of one day being a writer of guidebooks. And Lonely Planet was the pinnacle of that dream, always like the coolest place one could ever have an author credit. Well, after a ton of research and writing all last year, here I am, a Lonely Planet guidebook author. The highlight of the experience was working closely with my co-authors on the Atlantic Canada and the Canada wide guidebooks. Couldn’t ask for better colleagues. I learned so much from them, and together I think we killed it! BTW, online book sellers got a name wrong: congrats to the Atlantic team Jennifer Bain, Cathy Donaldson and Carolyn Heller!

When the Nova Scotia town of Yarmouth installed public art on Main Street, locals complained. Some locals. Others were grateful to town leaders for invigorating what was not long ago a downtown, emptied out by malls and big box stores. Is stone crab the world’s only renewable seafood? Fishermen remove one or both claws of the crab at sea, then return the critter to the water so it can regrow them for next season. In fact, it’s illegal to bring whole stone crab to the wharf in Florida. I recently traveled to the Florida Keys where stone crab is king to find out if these declawed crabs live and regenerate their limbs as advertised. I wasn’t sure I’d find the immersive multimedia experience with the works and life of Vincent Van Gogh anything but underwhelming. But then—to warnings of possible motion sickness—you enter the projection room. It’s hard to get beyond the entrance because people tend to stop at the first sight of the shifting, flowing, falling, spiraling projections of whole paintings and details, some as large as sunflower bouquets, some as small as a flower petal, across screens, walls and even the floor.
