: Today’s spotlight is on the famous Bear’s Hump Waterslide!

Bear's Hump trail has always been popular in Waterton Lakes National Park. In the 1930s, visitors demanded a new, fun way to get down from Bear's Hump that “isn’t as hard on the knees.”

Cited as “outrageous and ridiculous” by engineers at the time, the 200-metre tall waterslide was successfully completed in the early 1940s. Despite the bighorn incident of '49, the waterslide was a family favourite until the ‘70s, when fun was officially outlawed and the slide was dismantled.

For International Mountain Day, let us introduce you to Nii’tsitsspitaa (nit-SITS-SAH-pee-tah), The Only Tall Person.
It is the tallest mountain within the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, at 3,190 metres (10,466 feet)! You may know Nii’tsitsspitaa by another name: Mount Cleveland.

Waterton Lakes National Park lies within sacred Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot) territory.
