This giant Western Red Cedar ( ) is growing atop limestone, possibly connected to a special type of geological formation called karst. Karst formations are characterized by underground drainage systems. They make for a more productive rainforest by draining away rainfall while also giving tree's root systems a strong grip to withstand windstorms. These formations typically connect to underground caverns, and may even connect to rivers. has explored these karst passageways from the rivers and has discovered that salmon and cutthroat trout navigate these limestone caverns! It's amazing to think about the interaction between a trees canopy and the fish swimming in the river below.
