ConnecTour

ConnecTour In May, we’re travelling across Canada by bicycle for the journey and the connections, rather than the destination.

Over 8,000 kilometres and 135 days, we will seek out and connect with real Canadians to learn their stories and share them with you.

Between Kenora and Thunder Bay, a magical stretch of road winds through the western edge of the Canadian Shield through the hills, pine forests, and untouched wilderness of lake country.

Fishing lodges with a long history of hosting American sportsman dot the lakesides, many of them struggling to adapt and survive in an 18 month pandemic.

We met Jake and Ashley Trinker on an overnight at Crow Lake, as well and Quentin and Lori Branch as we camped on the lawn of their lodge on Banning Lake. We sipped on beer from the Branch’s new microbrewery and learned how they’ve redesigned their business to support local tourism.

As we parked our bikes in Fort Frances to have lunch, Norma crossed the street to say hello and ask where we were coming from. Within a few minutes, she had put a fifty on the table to buy us lunch. Another beautiful instance of the kindness and generosity we encounter every day.

Thank you, Norma!

We’re delighted to be joining this Saturday for their bike clinic. We’ll be there to help out and share tales from our cross-Canada ride to rebuild, reconnect, and restore communities across the country. Come out and see us on the path between the Legislature and the river from 11:15 am - 2:00 pm!

✨Last week on the ConnecTour road & on the blog ✨

↠ After our prairie pool party, we crossed into Saskatchewan and enjoyed a Chernobylesque campout at the old DEW line base in Alsask (sofa chair included)

↠ Our rest day in Rosetown brought us to an antique shop full of treasures, memories, and family history (dragons included)

While looking for a place to pitch their tents and lay their heads for the night, the ConnecTour crew found more than they bargained for. Ghosts stories of bygone told by the muse of Moiye herself.

“It’s haunted, definitely,” said Parson. “From the ladies of the evening. The church was dismantled years ago, and they put in a little brown shack.”

Now that we’ve got your attention, follow the link to read this ghost story in its eerily fascinating entirety. 👻

One week ago, the crew set out to begin the grand adventure. To say that the departure didn’t go quite according to plan would be an understatement. But with flexibility, adaptability, and gratitude, we are officially on the road!

For two of our crew, Doug and Lisa, the ride has taken a much grander meaning. Read their story on our blog, and if you feel inclined, support our friends in this now deeply personal cause.

Keep calm and pedal on.

With our grand departure from mile zero less than a month away and the pandemic still sweeping the country, we've found ourselves navigating some important questions.

“Are you . . . sure you will be safe? What about the people you’ll be meeting with? Aren’t you worried about the variants?”

These are all questions we've been navigating in the ever-shifting sea of information coming to us daily. While much of the media seem to be focusing on the negative, the ConnecTour team is remaining optimistic and finalizing our preparations in the belief that four weeks from now the skies will begin to clear.

As always, we will continue to diligently monitor public health recommendations and protocols as we prepare for our May 15th launch.

We may indeed have to shift our plans. In the meantime, there are 37 million stories out there waiting to be told about real people redefining their lives in the post-pandemic world. On May 15th, we plan to head out and capture a few of them.

In a little over a month, the ConnecTour team will set out to cover 8000 km of our grand country in a movement to reconnect, restore and rebuild our communities after a year of the pandemic.

As we’ve carefully assessed the latest data and recommendations as they becomes available, we are confident and optimistic that the ride can proceed safely under a set of clearly defined health protocols.

“Our number one concern is the safety of our guests and of the communities we visit. We are confident that, with the precautions we are taking, this amazing experience can be done with minimal risk.” - Rick McFerrin, Leader

Details on the measures we will be taking can be found on our website, and we encourage anyone with interest or questions to join us for a Zoom information session and Q&A this Thursday April 15th at 4 pm. Let’s talk!

NEW VIDEO! Our latest (and first) video is up! Rick takes us thorough a delightful and informative tutorial on one of the bike-packing mind bogglers- what to pack and how to fit it on your bike. 🤯

Travelling long distances on a bicycle is easier if you have a complete list of must-have items to bring along, and also know what you can live without.

Our in-house cycle touring veteran shows you everything you need to bring on your tour, and also shows you how he likes to pack his panniers for optimum convenience, safety and resistance to the elements. It’s the best 20 minutes you’ll invest before hitting the road.

Check it out and follow our very own YouTube channel!
