The Canadian War Memorials.

How does one reconcile the beauty of what we see today, with the harsh reality of loss and devastation that took place here?

These beaches saw boys and men gunned down within seconds. Open targets from the enemies awaiting them on the cliffs above. And yet, they pushed on. They sacrificed themselves with the belief that they were fighting for something greater.

Walking these beaches, you don’t feel like you’re walking alone. You’re walking with each soldier that fought to allow you to be there. And for them, we must continue walking.

Vimy Ridge.

This one deserves a permanent spot on the feed. Not in a reel, but in still form. And even that can’t capture the magnitude of this place.

Vimy Ridge.
Where our Canadian soldiers of WWI fought the Germans on the front lines.
Where the victory came at the cost of the lives of thousands of boys; boys, because many of them were the same age or younger than the teenagers we brought to witness this memorial.
Where the land is permanently scarred from shelling and bombing.
Can a picture capture and convey the magnitude of such a place? I don’t think so. But, I’ll capture it, and share it, so that maybe, we can learn and attempt to prevent it from happening again.

Vimy Ridge. May they rest in peace.

My third time in Berlin, and I’m still finding new things to marvel at.
“It’s always the small people who change things. It’s never the politicians or the big guys. I mean, who pulled down the Berlin Wall? It was all the people in the streets. The specialists didn’t have a clue the day before.” – Luc Besson

Berlin. This city is so “alive” with history. From Prussia to the Cold War, everywhere you go it’s possible to stumble upon some significant relic. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t start with a visit to Sachsenhausen.

We were reminded that looking for logic in a concentration camp was futile. It’s easy to ask, “How could one human be so ruthless to another?”. “How could anyone lack so much empathy that they could watch this much suffering, let alone inflict it?” Or simply “Why?”. But, the logic of war does not compare to the logic of humanity.

While it is not easy to understand, we must attempt to preserve the dignity of those lost by choosing to acknowledge, remember, and educate ourselves and our youth, to prevent history from ever repeating itself. We are also reminded how easily history is rewritten, to support the desires of the writer, and thus, one must always seek the truth.

While in Switzerland, we were fortunate to be hosted by family, who went above and beyond to make it a Christmas to remember. We caught up, we hugged, we were chauffeured, we were guided. But most of all, we were loved.

Casey shared a post on Instagram: "Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store; maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. 💫 While in Switzerland, we were fortunate to be hosted by family, who went above and beyond to make this a Christmas to remember. We caught up, we hugged, we were cha...

After Paris, we hit the road into Switzerland. Our first stop: Grindelwald, the fairytale mountain town, where we were reminded why winter tires are important and we travelled by train to the top of Europe. Beautiful!

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to visit St. Eugene’s Golf Resort in Cranbrook, BC. It is a beautiful hotel, with a lovely wedding venue, casino, and campsite.

For those of you who may not know, it is also an old Residential School. At first, this fact daunted me. However, St. Eugene’s did a great job of educating their guests about the history.

This school has been taken over by five indigenous communities, who have committed to taking something with a dark history and turning it into something positive and beautiful. The goal of St. Eugene’s is to showcase the indigenous heritage of the Ktunaxa people, and to provide economic stability for their community.

While visiting, we also had the opportunity to chat with Gordie- an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable man who had happened to attend the school. He was a wealth of information and had the most incredible memory! He filled us in on the history of the school, and provided us with an interesting, insightful perspective.

While he acknowledged that Residential Schools were terrible for many, many people, it was not for him. That he was able to leave his sadness and anger in the school to make something of himself. He wanted people to know not only of the struggles of his people, but that there were successes too. And this repurposing of St. Eugene’s is a success story for the Ktunaxa people.

As we traverse this new world of truth and reality coming to light, we must also acknowledge and support our indigenous communities. Visiting St. Eugene’s is one way we can do that.

Adrian and I are both lovers of good food and drink, especially while travelling. We had such a hard time deciding where to eat, that we settled on a walking pub crawl to try everything!

Each restaurant followed capacity protocols, physical distancing measures, and sanitization practices. We felt welcome and safe everywhere we went.

Banff has done a great job of following Covid protocols, while still allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere. If you’re itching for a getaway, I’d love to help!

Have you heard the stories about Alberta cars being targeted in B.C.?
•
I’d like to provide you with a different story: we spent a week in B.C., from Kelowna to Sicamous, and were only greeted with welcome and kindness.
•
Don’t let fear take over. We all have the knowledge and the tools to travel safely, to safe areas within our country. We are able to social distance and practice healthy habits, while still exploring and supporting local economies.
•
Not only are hotels and restaurants offering increased health and safety measures, the tourism sector is also stepping up to the plate. Wineries and wine tour companies, spas, orchards, and popular sites are following social distancing guidelines and mask protocols.
•
Still not sure? Try camping or boating! The perfect activities to maintain social distancing! If you’d like more info, or help planning a get away, send me a message!

We spent today getting pampered at Sparkling Hill! This resort is BEAUTIFUL! Infused with Swarovski crystal architecture, everything from the lobby to our room is luxurious.

We spent the majority of the day by the infinity pool, overlooking the lake, before enjoying a relaxing facial and massage in the Kurspa.
