Great article about the "White Hurricane" of 1913. More than 250 sailors were lost. At least 12 ships sank. Many more were stranded or smashed against the rocky shorelines from Lake Superior to Lake Erie in 100 MPH winds, 35ft seas and 2 feet of snow.

Two storm systems colliding over the Great Lakes created a "meteorological bomb" that roiled the inland seas.

Regretfully we will not be open in Ontario this year. Later in the summer check us out in PEI. www.sailpei.com

Tour boat rescue. We don't always just entertain, I know we have rescued the odd boat in distress but never a man in the water. Thank goodness the stars aligned for this man and his family!

Oak Island, N.S., may be known for its supposed curse and treasure, but one man who went overboard and nearly drowned was lucky to be found alive by a group touring the area on Monday.

Today was a perfect day on the water. So many wonderful guests. Perfect sunset to end the evening.

People ask about how we got into the sailing business. Here is a comical tale written by Ed Staskus on our journey to PEI and opening of the sail tour business. He called it "Walking the Plank". It was quite the adventure!

Ship story

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0º 31’ N and LONG 179 30’ W. The date was 31 December 1899.

“Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime.

He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship’s position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed.

The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many:

The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer.

The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.

The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.

In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.

This ship was therefore not only in:

Two different days,

Two different months,

Two different years,

Two different seasons.

With the announcement of Phase 3 not much is going to change with our operations. We will allow larger parties up to 12 people, but remember as always we limit to 6 adults plus children unless we have a conversation about weight and who is in the group. We are still only booking one group per tour so everyone on board is in the same social circle as per covid guidelines. For larger parties than 6 people, message us for details. Happy Sailing
