“IT’S WHO WE ARE…”

That was Linda Demarais’ response when we asked why it’s important to teach Anishinaabemowin to the students at Isaac Beaulieu Memorial School (IBMS) in the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

Linda has been a teacher since 1980, and now teaches the language to Sandy Bay students from kindergarten to grade 8.

This pillar of strength kept her language despite being sent to residential school as young child.

While that horrific system tried to rip away her language, Linda says her parents and grandparents would still speak it and share it with her whenever she came home from school.

Our language keepers and teachers are such precious resources of knowledge and culture. Many have persevered and continue to share their gifts against the greatest of odds.

Today, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) honours Linda Demarais for her courage and resolve, and we say miigwetch for giving the gift of language to the young ones in Sandy Bay.
