To me, that last 'final approach' on the way home, is always one of the most satisfying moments of a medical repatriation mission. It marks the closure of a job well-done, having made a positive difference for someone. But during these troubling times, it is also quite a relief to get back safely after being overseas, and care for my family who is waiting.

As a medical travel companion we spend many hours in planes (4 full days of flying for a single mission is not uncommon) but not many people know that we also spend a lot of time onboard ambulances and other types of ground transport, transferring our clients over the road somewhere in the world. We take responsibility for the care of our patient from the moment we show up, until the final destination is reached.

An abandoned London Gatwick airport with only a handful of flights leaving that day, even before flights to and from the UK were dropped due to the new strain of COVID19.
