If you don’t have camping under a starry Saharan sky on your bucket list, here's your sign to add it! ✨

The hot and dry environment of the Sahara Desert means that there is rarely a cloud covering the night sky, combined with its remote location, far away from civilization and light pollution, ensures an unforgettable stargazing experience.

Explore the desert in style!

Our private 4×4 journey to Erg Chigaga takes you to one of the least explored sand dunes in Morocco. The off-road drive will take you out of M’hamid (where the paved road ends) and into the wilderness of the Saharan Desert.

Once we arrive at our destination, you’ll enjoy a camel ride among the golden hued sand dunes, which will culminate with lunch at the camp or at a desert oasis. After lunch, you can choose to relax in a hammock, sandboard down some dunes, hit some golf balls into the large expanse of sand, learn how to make a traditional Moroccan tagine. There are a myriad of activities for you to choose from! Or you may choose to do nothing at all and bask in the tranquility of the desert, it’s up to you!

Since the 1960s, the laid-back fishing village of Taghazout has been a destination for beach seekers. Since then, it has become a popular surfing destination known for its ideal conditions and less crowded beaches. Both beginner and experienced surfers will find waves suited to their skill level here.

Taghazout is located on just north of the city of Agadir in southwestern Morocco and on the Atlantic coast. This is one of the most idyllic spots on the coast and experiences perennially great weather, a chilled-out atmosphere, and a great selection of accommodations and restaurants.

If surfing isn't your thing, there are plenty of other activities to partake in such as yoga, hiking, trying the local cuisine, or simply relaxing on the beach.

In the northernmost region of the Atlas range is where you'll find the forested slopes of the Middle Atlas.

The Middle Atlas lays south of Fez and Meknes and runs south to towards Marrakech. Often covered in thick forests of oak and cedar, it’s home to lakes, the Barbary ape and several national gems, including the majestic Ouzoud cascades and Ifrane National Park.

Looking for a fun activity while you're visiting Erg Chigaga?

You must try sandboarding!

A great way to explore the epic sand dunes of the desert is to surf them 🏂🏄🏾 – unfortunately, climbing the dunes for a greater thrill does require some vigorous uphill walking! But well worth it in our opinion 😉

One of our favourite places to spend a night in Skoura is the well-appointed riad L’Ma Lodge.

This charming guest house is situated inside of a traditionally built adobe house, located in the heart of the palm grove of Skoura. The Skoura palm grove is one of the few remaining groves in Morocco that is still inhabited and cultivated. This area is renowned for its charm, beauty and traditional architecture.

During your stay at this property, explore the luxuriant garden and private pool area, both of which offer a multitude of places to relax.

A stay at this wonderful riad is included in our 5 Days/4 Nights Fez & Sahara to Marrakesh itinerary – click the link in our bio to learn more.

Have you enjoyed a cup of authentically prepared Moroccan mint tea?

Moroccan mint tea is part of everyday life for the majority of Moroccans. This tea is usually served as a welcoming gesture to friends, family and guests upon arrival.

To make traditional Moroccan mint tea, the ingredients are Gunpowder loose tea, a generous bunch of fresh spearmint leaves, and sugar. You'll also need either a Moroccan teapot or a heat-resistant teapot that can support your stove’s heat without breaking, to brew the tea. To enhance the tea, you can add other herbs, spices, and aromatics.

To serve the tea in the traditional ceremonial way, it must be poured from a height. The higher the tea is poured, the more foam you will get on top of your drink and that is the mark of a true traditional Moroccan Mint Tea.

At our desert camp in Erg Chigaga we prepare a traditional tea ceremony for all our arriving guests to welcome them to the camp!

Fez was the seat of power in Morocco for 4 different dynasties, for a total of around 650 years.

After being built by Idris I during the 8th-9th centuries, it has since been ruled by the Marinids, Wattasids and Alouites. Fez relinquished its most recent hold of the throne in 1912, when the French administrators decided to move the capital to Rabat. It has never relinquished its heritage however, and more than anywhere else in Morocco, and perhaps the entire Arab world, this is the place to see a medieval city, still living, still breathing.

The Fez medina is one of the largest care-free zones in the world – and a living museum of Moroccan culture. The medina is not easy to navigate so it may be wise for us to arrange a tour for you with one of our trusted guides. Not only are they knowledgeable, but they can customize the tour to your liking, whether it be learning about the rich history of the city or shopping for the exquisite craftsmanship of the local craftsman – the sky's the limit when it comes to what to do in Fez.

- Sunscreen for your face and body

- Scarf/shawl that can be used for protection against possible sandstorms and to cover your shoulders if necessary

- A travel sized medical kit that may include: Imodium, laxatives, pain medication, motion sickness aids (in the event of motion sickness during the drive through the Atlas mountains), allergy medications, etc.

- Insect repellant, in the event you are in areas where there might be mosquitoes, especially during the warmer months of April – October

- Plastic bag to keep valuable electronics clean and safe in the event of a possible sandstorm

Those seeking adventure need to look no further than just outside of Marrakech where you'll find the High Atlas mountains.

This majestic mountain range has several peaks that reach over 3,000 meters and has North Africa’s highest peak, Jebel Toubkal (4,167 meters), which lies within the Toubkal National Park. The High Atlas offers numerous options for trekking, but it’s an equally fantastic place to kick back and enjoy the stunning scenery.

If you choose to visit Casablanca on your next visit to Morocco then the Hassan II Mosque is a must-see!

This impressive structure took 7 years and 10,000 craftsmen to build.

This is the 7th largest mosque in the world and claims the title of the largest minaret in the world, measuring 700 feet tall. The minaret is capped with a spotlight that shines east towards Mecca and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.

When you visit the Hassan II Mosque, be sure to cover your knees and shoulders before entering, out of respect.

Not only is Hassan II Mosque stunning, but it is also one of the few religious buildings in Morocco that is open to tourists–making it extra special in our opinion.

The heart of Morocco can be found in its medinas, the ancient walled towns found within almost all of the modern day cities of our country.

Medinas are the place to visit for a souk shopping experience, where Moroccan artisans work and sell their various handicrafts such as pottery, leather clothes, carpets, and so much more. Here you will also find authentic riads, palaces, mosques, and monuments.

Here are 5 medinas you should include in your Moroccan itinerary:
- Jemaa El-Fna in Marrakech
- The medina in Essaouira
- Fes el Bali in Fez
- The Chefchaouen Medina
- The medina with 100 minarets in Meknes

Have you visited any of these medinas before? Do you have a personal favourite? Share with us below!

The original inhabitants of North Africa are often referred to as the Berber or Amazigh people.

Amazigh roughly translates to mean “free-man” and the term Berber is a variation of the Greek word Barbaros (barbarian).

So, Amazigh is considered more politically correct but the majority of our staff refer to themselves as Berber.

Many Amazigh/Berber people live in the rural regions of Morocco. This includes the mountainous regions like the High Atlas, Middle Atlas, and Rif mountains – as well as the desert areas.

Here, at Sahara Touring, the majority of our staff are Berber and were born and raised in the desert. So if you’re looking for an authentic tour of these landscapes, then we got you covered 😉
