The lie most of us are fed in the United States is that because we are a leader of developed nations that that means we do most things quite well and naturally. In fact, where breastfeeding and maternal health is concerned, our outcomes lag far behind many other nations, even many very poor nations. So, if you see a mom nursing an older child and that feels strange or uncomfortable to you, note that feeling as a part of the cultural conditioning that is in the water here and choose to actively move away from it. Take that moment instead to praise that mom. Maybe ask her what her journey has been like thus far. Maybe don't just quickly look away as if she is disturbing the peace by feeding her baby openly and without shame. Because there are some moms who seem gifted and divinely placed to remind us all of everything that is possible and these beautiful beings do not deserve isolation, discouragement, chastising, whispers, or awkward glances. They deserve to be held up for the miracles they are in showing all of us how to survive and thrive despite an environment that isn't always welcoming or supportive. Each of these parents are leaders in their own right, charting a path for their children and their communities to better understand the needs of breastfeeding parents.

"You should have heard the glugs these two were making after the fierce milk let down I had while looking at the pair of them and thinking how things really don’t get better than this. I’ve yet to fathom this tandem nursing thing - I know this looks exhausting but so far I’m finding it way more enjoyable and less painful than breastfeeding while pregnant - and although we’ve not quite found a comfortable position yet and I have no idea how it’s affecting my milk supply, they both fell asleep simultaneously seconds after this and so for now I’m claiming it as my own personal superpower 💪🏼 (spot the doll in the mix there too - the one who makes Eliana look like she has a tiny body and a massive head!)"

You may be supplementing because you are not producing enough milk for your baby. Or you may be using formula for other reasons. In either case, you likely have questions about whether or not it is okay to mix formula into your milk.

It is recommended that formula not be mixed with human milk for the following reasons:
~Formula and human milk have different storage guidelines.
~Mixing formula into human milk decreases some of the protective components of human milk.
~Components in formula might bind to live components in human milk making them less absorbable by your baby’s body.
