rip currents are strongest around rocks, islands and submerged sandbars?

Rip currents are strong and fast moving currents of water travelling away from the shore towards the open ocean. These currents can pull beachgoers and surfers out of their comfort zones and into deeper waters.

Spot a rip current by looking for:
• A place where the waves are not breaking regularly due to the current
• A channel of dark choppy water
• Foam, seaweed, suspended sand in the water column and other debris flowing from the shore out to the ocean

If you are caught in a rip current:
1. Don't fight the current.
2. Swim out of the current perpendicular to the direction of the current, then swim to shore.
3. If you can't escape, float or tread water.
4. If you need help, call or wave for assistance.

WHY DO HUMPBACKS HAVE SUCH LONG PECTORAL FLIPPERS?

There are many physical features of a humpback whale that set it apart from other large whales. Perhaps the most striking are those enormous “arms,” known as pectoral flippers or pecs. At up to 4.5m (15 ft.), or about a third of the whale’s body length, they’re longer by far than those of any other type of whale. In fact, they’re the longest appendages in the animal kingdom! Even the humpback’s scientific name refers to them—Megaptera is Greek for “big-winged.” What do they use those long gangly things for? Lots of things, but mainly for feeding. To corral fish and krill into their cavernous mouths, these 40-ton giants need to make fast, tight turns. The long pecs give them this agility. Not only are they rotatable, but they’re edged with large irregular bumps called “tubercles” that help reduce drag and increase lift. This enables the whale to keep its “grip” on the water at sharper angles and turns. It’s a superbly efficient design—which is why it’s inspiring engineers to build better wind turbines, ventilation fans, aircraft and even surfboards!
